I've always owned Honda Civic's, but when one got crushed last spring I did some comparison shopping and found that the '08 Elantra was the best value car on the market. This was just before Consumer Reports announced the USA model of the Elantra as the best small sedan of '08.
I picked up a GL-manual from Hyundai of Mississauga. This dealership accepted my offer with extras (Mudguards and Window Tint). All in (Tax, freight, licensing) the car cost $18100. I also noticed afterwards that they don’t charge the $350+ licensing/registration b.s. fees that other dealerships charge.
After almost a year of driving, I’m very satisfied with the car. It’s better than any Civic that I’ve ever owned. The fit & finish are great and the interior and features are more than you can ask for, from a car in this price range. I believe that the interior room also competes with the Accord. I never saw the necessity for heated seats, overkill in my mind, but I’ve really learned to appreciate the feature during this winter. The one beef that I do have is that the stock all-season Hankook tires are the worst I’ve ever experienced for winter driving. Winter tires are a must for next year. Otherwise, I’d recommend this car to anyone.

I test drove a 08 elantra a while back and I think that the quality has come a long way since the pony. For the bang for the buck priciple....you can't go wrong with 0% over 5 years anyway...doesn't cost you anything to drive it...5 years later..get rid of it and o it all over again.
Oh..btw..for the honda and toyota fans....here is a run down on my cars I have owed : 1990 pontiac sunbird...bought in 1994 used...no problems..if anyhting is was more reliable then the next car I bought....
2001 honda prelude, bought brand new, 2 tranny issues for 5th gear grind...and oil burning issue that was the death of the car, as I spun a bearing. and now I own a 2001 honda crv which has been just perfect also....so as you can see..no matter what you buy and from who...it's a matter of what model you get and was it made on a friday at 3pm..either EST or PST :P

I have a 2002 Elantra - had it from day one - 160,000km, and no problems with it...still going strong. I purchased it due to the 0% interest over 4 years. Been VERY happy with my purchase - 7 years later!
I am picking up a 2008 Santa Fe GLS tomorrow. The only thing that would have been better would be to have purchased this a year ago (or so) from the US...the car is very safe compared to its competitors and is fully loaded (sunroof, leather, heated seats, gps, etc...)_______________

My wife and I bought a 2006 Elantra GT in 2006. It was the last year of the "hatchback" Elantra model. We loved it, great car. We just traded it in a few weeks ago and upgraded to a 2008 Hyundai Veracruz Limited.
We just decided it was time to move to a bigger vehicle for the future. Nothing against our Elantra - just wanted an upgrade.
We got it on 0% financing for 72 months. Our Elantra was purchased with their Future Value financing (0.9% - 60/84 term). I don't recommend the Future Value Finance option if you plan on trading in the car in a few years, since your payments are lower - you don't pay down the loan as fast and it takes longer to get any equity in the car.
Depreciation is always a concern - when you drive it off the lot it costs you money. But on the other hand, we got a car with absolutely no interest charges and it's covered on warranty for 5 years/100,000. We purchased an extended warranty through our dealer to make it an 8 year/160,000 warranty. If we don't use the extended warranty, the full amount gets refunded at the end of 8 years.
All in all - I am very happy with Hyundai! Everyone that has seen our Veracruz is amazed at the quality of it - it's on par with many of the high end brands. Looks a lot like a Lexus or Acura from the outside.

We have an 09 sonata amongst our cars. Car gets poor mpg when compared to competition. Car has no soul. Having said that, its interior is roomy and feels solid. Seats can a bit more comfy but perhaps they need to be broken into. So far it has been a good point A to B family car. Just wish i could get better than 11-12l /100km. My 10 year old Stratus gets 10l/100 km and both are 4 cyl. Folks shop around, if you enjoy driving keep this car at the bottom of your list. BUt if you have a family and on a budget, this should be up there.

What kind of mileage does the car have? I've read that Hyundai's can take 5-8k before the engines breaks in and gas mileage improves. According to CR, the Sonata has "impressive" fuel consumpsion. The Toyota's I've owned have been excellent but a Camry is going to be $5K more and street rate financing.

I drive a 4 cyl 09 Sonata which I am just rolling onto 10 000 km and I get on average 7.3~7.8 L/100km. Even when it was brand new I never got worse than high 8's.
I agree that it isn't ridiculously fun to drive (coming from a Saab 9-5 Aero), but to me a car is a tool to get me to work and back. It's peppy enough to pass at highway speeds and at no point have I felt like the car was underpowered.
