2 Terabyte Memory Stick Cards Announced

News is a few weeks off but I just noticed it and am pretty amazed that they are already at the point of fitting 2 terabytes into a Memory Stick and M2 Micro!

SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK) and Sony Corporation today announced the joint development of two expanded formats that will shape the flash memory landscape for years to come. "Memory Stick format for Extended High Capacity (Tentative name)" expands the "Memory Stick PRO" format series to achieve a maximum storage capacity of 2-terabytes (TB)*1, while the "Memory Stick HG Micro" format enables a maximum data-transfer speed of 60 megabytes per second (MB/s)*2, making it one of the fastest-smallest memory card formats to date. Format licensing corresponding to the "Memory Stick format for Extended High Capacity" and the "Memory Stick HG Micro" is scheduled to start in 2009.

They don't have 2TB cards, they're just announcing a new format which supports up to 2TB in capacity. It's just for future proofing the format.

Yes, it's announced, but in your original post you make it sound as if they're releasing a 2TB memory card. They're nowhere near that point yet.

The announcement is describing a format which is capable of addressing 2TB of data. But the maximum capacity you'll see over the near future is the same as any other memory format, probably 16-32gb.

Even when they release a 2TB stick some day, it would be a laughable matter given the ultra low 20MB/s theoretical transfer rate...

You would need about 28 days to fill that stick up, and that's assuming a constant 20MB/s which of course won't happen.

Even if the 8-bit pattern was used with a theoretical max of 60MB/s, again it would take a stupendous 9 to 10 hours...

I think the memory stick manufacturers should really look into improving the transfer rates before they double and triple the capacity again. Why don't we see some eSATA sticks? Or some Firewire 800 sticks? Those interfaces are far more appropriate for fast speed.

These are memory sticks for portable devices. Not sure why you're mentioning eSATA. If you need a card reader for any particular format, you can usually get them in multiple interface methods to the computer. I know SanDisk makes a CF firewire reader. But it's expensive, most people don't care enough about it and just want large capacity for cheap.

Memory Stick is totally useless unless you have a Sony device.
