2008 Rav4 not admissable on CDN import list ...

We are looking at purchasing a vehicle across the border for obvious reasons. Between who honours warranties and how, it is become challenging to even decide on a vehicle! But we continue our journey ...
Our current issue is that the 2008 Toyota Rav4 is on the www.riv.ca inadmissable list.
My questions is this: [I]Is it possible that it is on the list for some simple modification issue?[I] (ie. daytime running lights is one that needs to be modified on some vehicles)
So, could admissable simply be "ready to roll" so to speak while, inadmissable might be a range of things from the running lights to some emissions issues and beyond - some of which will never be admissable period and others that will be with modifications?
I would love to hear from anyone who has looked into the "riv" list further - especially with regards to the Rav4 or Forrester.

No admissable either means ready to roll or that simple modifications must be made. Inadmissable means inadmissable, period--well until 15 years is up. I don't know why the RAV4 is on that list (since it is sold here) but there must be some difference in the US model that is significant enough for it to be placed on that list. It's not just child seat tethers or DRLs--if it were those things it would be on the admissable list.

is there an updated RIV list? because I can't find were it specifically says the 2008 rav is inadmissable. I think that they just haven't updated the list yet. I emailed them about a 2008 highlander (which isn't on the list yet) and they said that it would be admissible see the following:

If manufacturer after September 1st, 2007 vehicle must have an immobilizer also known as a locking system.
If vehicle does not come equipped with that option or can be installed, vehicles will be deemed inadmissible.
This vehicle appears to be admissible as it is cited on Transport Canada's List of Vehicles Admissible from the United States as admissible, revised June 2006 under Section 5 – Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle (MPV). This vehicle must bear a Statement of Compliance label affixed by the Original Equipment Manufacturer stating that "the vehicle as manufactured to comply with all US federal emission, bumper and safety standards on the date of manufacture". This label is located on the pillar of the driver door side. Failing that, we will accept a letter from the manufacturer stating the same. about 8 Years ago, I was looking into getting an Isuzu Amigo... just loved the look.



But it wasn't allowed in Canada due to a seat belt issue... Can't really remember why.

It should be admissible, I think the only real differences between the 08 and 07 is that the engine immobilizer is an option on the Base and Sport, not just the Limited now.

Why not try to get an '07 for cheap?

Mine was about 25,400 USD (Pre taxes) for Sport V6 4x4 w/ Sunroof and 6CD changer (and other options like Tow prep, DRL, Floor Mats etc)

Whatever you do, you MUST get the V6, it HAULS in this thing!

It seems that there are NO 2008 Toyota's on the list yet. Does anyone have any explanation why?

Your list isn't quite correct; you list a bunch of vehicles that are admissible if they are built after Sept 2007 - the same vehicles are also admissible if built before Sept 2007 (in most case for the ones that specify 'after Sept 2007', it's because some trims are and some aren't - in these cases, all the trims built before Sept 2007 are admissable as well)

It is admissible with a "but", i.e. the EIS "see notes", meaning that you have to have the immobilizer one way or the other.

It is standard on the Limited in the US, but Optional for the Base, Sport trims. So it is likely it is not installed.

I want to find out any suggestions as to where to get one installed locally in Vancouver. Hopefully a trustworthy installer, with good workmanship, and how much.

I'm getting one as well, but savings is not as much as I thought, after taking off the 6.1% duty because this is made in Japan.
