3 men drowned while fishing in Rice Lake over the weekend..
They had 7 people in a small boat..the article didn't say size.
but most likely its one of those alum. 14 footers...
Even if it was a 20 ft fishing boat...to fit 7 people in it is crazy...
People be careful out in the waters...respect the weather and water...
I fish quite often in the summer...and so many times I have witness idiots cram so many people into a rental boat...or not wear life-jackets...
Unfortunately, most of the time they are typically people from Toronto driving up to Rice Lake, or Simcoe, or Chemong, stoney lake, and rent one of those 14 footers for the day....sadly it seems to be the alot of the Asians that does that.....In the fishing community, we refer to them as the 'white bucket' fishermens...for they always carry those 'white buckets' that is used in asian groceries/restuarants to carry their fishes....

always wear a life jacket no matter how strong a swimmer you are. You never know what the weather conditions are.. you might hit your hit on the side of teh boat or whatever.
Life jackets probably woulda saved lives here unless for some reason the boat tipped over :S_______________

It sounds like the waters were quite rough and it appears to be a large lake. Horrible news for the families.

As fishing lakes go, it's decently sized. It's more long than anything; but it can get quite rough since it's quite flat around the Rice Lake area.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked felixdd for this post.

At 18 Foot, 7 people in it is really really pushing it....At most I would put 5 people in it...
From what people were saying, Rice Lake was really bad in terms of wind and waves...Even the local experts did not dare venture out for fishing...
Those fishermen should've used better senses...
Even if you are a great swimmer, if your boat capsizes...its hard with the wind, wave, cold water to survive....especially at Rice Lake where there is lots of seaweed to get your feet tangle....
Its really an unfortunate event, that is Totally preventable...
Stuff like this should not occur if people had more respect for the waters.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked commie for this post.

Where would the sympathy come from? Maybe some for the family for having such an idiot as a father.
The owner is responsible for his guests. He basically.. 'killed them'. Perhaps not intentionally, but they were his responsibility. Why he would let them not wear a lifejacket is beyond me. The weather must not have been too good either for the boat to go down.

Whipping winds and whitecaps, freezing water and air temperatures, no PFD's = very scary.

I had a cottage at Curtis Point (near Harwood) for 18 years. I've seen 6 foot waves on that lake. My dock was swept away twice in one summer from thunderstorm waves. The worst one was when a wave took out my pump house which is 7 feet above the beach!!! The damn thing got crunched by
the wave and got torn off it's foundation. Even on clear days the wind can whip up that lake so the center can get really really rough.
The lake is long and narrow between sets of hills so the wind from the west funnels down the lake and can get incredibly rough.
I have never gone out on the lake without wearing a pfd even in my 21 foot boat. Madness and a tragedy.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked king_george for this post.

That's messed up.
Should have worn a life jacket. Safety measures should always be taken when ever possible.
On a similiar note, I heard on the radio some punk in an "Acura" was doing 185km/h coming back from Wasaga Beach. Had a suspended license as well.
Weak sauce. I took a 89 Celica upwards of 190km/h and went by a cruiser, but he didn't even care. Guy was doing roughly 160km/h himself. The "Acura" Integra could have easily done 220km/h :DLast edited by Emancipated; May 23rd, 2006 at 10:52 AM.

Mind you, there was nothing in the story that said that the group weren't wearing life jackets. We are just making assumptions that none of them were wearing life jackets.
However, I have to agree with you. Assuming they weren't wearing life jackets, or even worse, boozed it up before/during the trip, it was a tragedy just waiting to happen.
