hands down the denon is the best value best sounding.
If you have the extra funds go with the yamaha.

I'm in the same boat. The yammy seems like too much receiver for me, but at that price, I might try my luck. I've also been eyeing the 1018 and 789 - both are getting good reviews. Lately I've kind of been set on Denon, but these newer Pioneer's are looking nice!
decisions, decisions!

The good thing about 1018 is that a USB port for MP3/WMA is available which not seen in other receivers.

Where would the Onkyo TX-SR606 rank compared to the above?

I have the Yammy 6190B, I bought it for $1099 last fall, and that was a good price.
Very tight sound, it does a magnificent job with my 7.1 system pumping 130W/channel.
The Yamaha has 4/1 HDMI.
The Denon and the Pioneer have 3/1.
The deal on the Yamaha is so good, it doesn't even make sense to look at the other two. If you have $399-499 to spend, do yourself a favour and spend $699. You won't be disappointed.
Incidentally, I have another Yamaha that normally retails for $500.
It does not even remotely compare to the 6190.
That is how different the 6190 is to the other 2 receivers._______________

I just got this for $399... go to FS and speak to a rep, see what they can do for you.
no ipod connectivity is only major negative here.

great receiver, front usb port is a big plus. Ugly GUI but lots of tweaks available
FS

good receiver, almost double the price of the 1018 and 789 though.
any of these should be fine though.

I don't know about the other 2, but the Pioneer is a big amp. I had to cut the back of my audio/video shelf to let that baby in.
That's a lot of amp for the money.

don't forget about the Pioneer Elite VSX-9130-TXH-K for $699 as well. (from $899 at best buy)
The difference with this amp is it has THX Select 2. The other spec's seem to be similar to the 1080, although it's an Elite brand, which I'm assuming uses better parts overall along with THX Select 2.
