Will the image be noticeably better going from Optoma HD65 to the 2040HD? Screen size is 110".
Wait for a 4K deal?

BB is selling the 2040 new for 999-100 = 899 on special right now, so I took the dive and grabbed one yesterday. Thanks OP!

Haven't seen any reviews on Epson factory refurbs. For those who bought before, have you gotten a clean, mostly clean, or dirty units?

This model only came out a year ago, and they seem to release models every other year, so it's hard to judge if they're just pruning service stock or if they really had something going on with this model...

If you don't want 3D then the 1040 is the better choice over the 2040.
The 1040 has WUXGA (1920x1200) resolution vs only 1080p (1920x1080) on the 2040 , and is significantly brighter at 3000 lumens of brightness vs 2200.

I personally picked the 2040 because I wanted a home theater projector. 3D was a big plus (although I'l probably only use it a couple of times a year at most, at least now i'll have it), and the 2040 also has a shorter throw distance (so you can have a bigger screen with the projector placed at the same distance from the screen/wall)

This is a good video comparing the 1040, 2040 and 740 for those who are still on the fence and can't decide.

Thank you!! I was looking at comparisons and saw the shorter throw advantage of the 2040 which is certainly interesting to me. We're going to have this in the basement which I believe will have ample space to move the projector as far back as we need, but it would be nice to have the flexibility of having the projector closer if we ever put it in a tighter room.. That said, if we put it in another room the better lumens out of the 1040 could be needed.

The 3D is not an advantage to me, I'll never use it.

From experience, I'd avoid 3LCD projectors. Most of the ones I've acquired has burn-in failure on one of the colour polarizers, and they are REALLY hard and expensive to replace.

I've had no problems with the DLPs I've acquired, and colour wheels are much easier to service.

IMO 3D itself is enough bargain for a $40, but the main thing is 2040 is more targeted towards video than the 1040.

- Higher contrast ratio (deeper black which is already suffering with LCD projectors).
- 1920x1080 native resolution, which means that no scaling whatsoever during video or gaming (when the 1040 is connected to a PC you can avoid scaling by setting the output to native 1920x1200, but you can't do the same when connected to a console or a media player).
- Lower input lag (actually 1040 has twice the input lag of the 2040) making the 2040 a winner for gaming.
- Advanced image processing most notably frame interpolation.
- Yeah on paper 1040 is notch brighter than the 2040, but practically unless you are only running at daytime you will end up switching the lamp eco mode any way as the 2040 is more than bright enough.

Unless you can notice the rainbow effect of DLP projectors ;)
How long does it take for burn-in failures to develop in modern projectors ? this projector is covered for 3 years (2 from Epson one + 1 from CC) alongside any other purchasable extended warranty.

Input lag:
- 2040: 25 milliseconds
- 1040: 53 milliseconds
- 740: 53 milliseconds (39 milliseconds gaming mode).

The least the better ..

Most of the ones I bought were business retirements, so it's probably got several thousand hours and probably 6 years old. You are also correct about the DLP rainbow effect, though I've found it less apparent with newer models as well.

Downside of 3 LCD is you won't get a good black level at higher brightness.

True indeed, but its arguable that at these entry level prices going DLP wont give much noticeable improvement (if at all).

A Benq 2050 or a cheaper 10xx has appreciable quality difference to any 3lcd projector under 1k. You'd need to go to around 2k+ for the next big step up. Possibly a refurb Epson 5030ub too, but input lag is killer.

It all depends on which AVSFroums thread you are reading :)
Benq 2050/10xx were put against 2040/2045 in the 2040 AVSForums thread and many would beg to differ with you :)

2040 has one of the cheapest bulbs you can buy for a projector.
