I was comparing the max range of 200 vs 300, and there really isent all that much of a difference. I think Im back to the 55-200 vs 18-200 again. My heads going to explode... Then again, the 70-300 is better built than the 55-200, and loosing the 55-70 is no big deal, however its expensive.

Blah, anyone have any opinions on the Sigma 70-300? Its cheap at $170. http://www.cameracanada.com/eNet-cart/P ... N&type=1,3

That one is crap - you want the APO version. That one doesn't have HSM either, so no autofocus with the D40.
I have found the APO version for $200 online, used. Is it really worth $200, or is spending $50 more worth it for the 55-200 with VR?

Also, I cannot find the Sigma with the HSM. According to DPReiview http://www.dpreview.com/news/0801/08013 ... 300hsm.asp, the 70-300 APO already has a built in motor, without the HSM name...now Im confused.

Edit: It seems both lens have the exact same name, while only one has the motor. It looks like its an uphill battle to find a cheap 70-300 with motor as it was just released this Jan.

Iv made my decision, the Nikon 70-300 VR is it. Its got the range I was looking for, and the VR is a plus. The Sigma lens is cheap, however lacks VR, while the 18-200 range is just short of what I really want. Now all I need to do is find it cheap.

The future upgrade path is likely a 16-85, or a fast 85 prime.

I guess Ill check out the latest prices for the 70-300, just to confirm everything. I will likely be using it first at a Leafs game downtown next week, will 300mmVR + f/5.6= 1/125(I hope I can go that slow) be enough to stop action at the ACC?
You're going to need to smuggle that lens in... no detachable lenses above 75mm allowed for Leafs games (http://www.theaircanadacentre.com/about ... uide_id=19)

When I went, and got caught, the security person was savvy enough to make me check my 55-200mmVR, while still allowing me to bring in my 18-55mm.
