Hello folks, I made an appointment with a garage door company to have somebody come in and install the garage door opener for us. This is the same company who put in the garage door so the lady asked me to get an *8 foot extension boom* before they can proceed.
I got a Chamberlain chain drive opener as a gift not last year and I went to Home Depot and bought 2 longer metal bars that can go up to the ceiling (instead of the short bars that come with the opener). I let the lady know and she told me I am all set but what exactly is the *8 foot extension boom* ? Our garage door measure 8 feet wide and 7 feet long and the ceiling is about 13 feet high i believe, just your standard end-unit townhouse in the suburbs
This is a single car garage.
Thanks.

but for a single car garage, you don't need to buy anything else
all you need is inside the box

One thing I always do when I install a garage door opener is that I cut a 2x10 or 2x12 approx 2 feet long and then bolt it above the garage door in the centre of the door. I then screw the rail/track into the wood when putting up the opener. The odds of a stud dead centre where the railing/tracking is to be attached is highly unlikley and you can't screw the rail/track into drywall.

Sounds like you need the rail extension posted above. The rail that the chain/belt for the opener moves along needs to be as long as your door is HIGH. Otherwise, the door will hit the motor as it moves back along the horizontal rails.
The chain/belt rail that comes in the box is for doors that are 6 ft. high. If your door is higher, you need an extension.
Don't think the woman on the phone was talking about the angle iron used for mounting the motor from the ceiling. I'd call to confirm.

As others have said, the extension is for the rail. The door comes with a 7 foot rail, which is normally good enough but if your door is a bit taller, you will need a longer one. You need to give them the door dimensions.
My Son just took delivery of a new house (townhouse as well) and we gave him a garage door opener as a moving in gift. It was also a Chamberlain. We got it from AAA Promaster, 2608 Innes Road, Gloucester, ON K1B 4Z, (613) 845-9942. They are an authorized dealer, do the installation and, have all the parts in the truck. It took the guy a little more than 1 hour, start to finish.
