i believe the 7900gs are faster and great OCers however you do miss out on the DX10 and other capabilities like dedicated H264 processing, and maybe even HDCP.
but if you dont need any of those extras, the 7900gs are great. try to find one on the forums for a better deal.

8600GT vs 7900GS
Wondering what you guys would pick out of the 2, I'm leaning towards the 7900GS but the 8600GT is cheaper.

Missing out on DX10 with a 8600GT isn't really missing out on anything. It's not fast enough to make any use of its DX10 capabilities in the first place.
Also, HDCP isn't a guarantee with 8600GT. Most cards will have it, but it's still up to the vendor to add it to the card. I have a bunch of 8600GT's at work without HDCP.

I would have bought a 1950 (a little slower than the 8800's) instead of the 8600. For about the same or a little more (depends on the versions), it would be 10x (not quite lol) the card, you just don't get the dx10, which I can wait for anyway.

I doubt I'll play a dx10 game soon. I don't even have enough ram to meet crysis.
