Once it's past 1280x1024, are you going to slow down in a fast action FPS game and take a look around at the minute details? Stand there and gawk while someone comes around the corner and kills you on his GF4 Ti4200 or something. Geez... To reach 1600x1200 you'll even need a 19" CRT or LCD at the least!
I'd love to have a rig that will game steadily at 1600x1200. The jump to 1280x1024 was fantastic. Games like HL2 and Doom3 would look even better. Just can't afford the leap. SLI is finally getting to the point where you can get credible 16x12 framerates, but I'll have to wait until I win the lottery.

SLI, I am debating , been doing research and drivers are weak , also I question current game support. Dunno if the added cost justifies it over current fast (6600GT and higher) single agp card performance on the same type of rig, ie) processor and ram

How can I be broke when I am saving so much?

running 9800 pro 256mb without a prob with CS:S, at 1280X1024. Full details. Very playable wtih 24-32players. Runnign AMD 64 3000+.

Th e9800 pro is decent in Doom3 also, at 1024, and COD it works very well at 1600X1200.

Full details? I'm hoping you don't mean AA and AF.

I myself have went from a 9800 Pro 128 to a X800 Pro on my previous setup K8V-SE Deluxe & a Athlon64 3000+ all on stock setting's & I noticed a world of diffrence playing games on both cards ...

But I do agree ..... hold off for the official launch of the X800 XL as its a good deal .. especialy if ya have pci-express going or want to eventualy ... would liek to see it in a agp version but the pci express to agp bridges of ati's are not looked at being available till march roughly ...

If ya got to buy now .. pick up a used one or a OEM one & just silencer it & then run it @ 500 / 500 & ya should be happy with that ...

I thought AA and AF wasnt included as a game feature and you had to force it with the drivers.

CS:S is more about cpu power than video due to all the physics/bullets/shell casings flying around. My rig. A64 newcastle @ 2.5ghz 1GB ram and X800pro @ 550/580 running at 1280*960 with 2xAA & 8xAF can range from 140 in some areas to low 40 fps in firefights. Way too jerky for me when that happens. I need at least a min of 60fps for optimal play.

sorry, took a while to get CSS up and running due to the steam update...

1600x1200. all in-game video options set to high (including "Reflect All") except for AA and AF:

AA = 0x (none)
AF = 16x

decided to go a bit "easy"

CSS Video Stress Test: 47.91fps

Aquamark03 stock & default bench -

Aquamark03 w/ overdrive on & default bench -

my opinion .. get 1 if the money is burning a hole in ur pocket but otherwise as I sugested above .. hold off for the bigger & better :)
