Kids that age swearing are not uncommon on the playground.

Neighbourhood, definitely. There would be a very strong reaction (putting it mildly) from the other parents and I if someone and their kids showed up at the playground and started swearing or generally acting like an ***** .

I don't ever recall anyone acting so boorishly in a playground (and we're probably at different nearby playgrounds 3x a week). I live in mid-town Toronto.

The younger boys sometimes swear but I don't think twice about telling them to watch their language, and they are usually respectful. The parents, no.

I don't think I've ever heard adults swear at our neighbourhood playground but kids, sure. It happens. They're not my kids and they're not swearng at me or my son so I don't do anything about it. You can't prevent your children from exposure to this. At 4, they'll be starting JK, which is about the time my own son started hearing this stuff. We just tell him that these are bad words and should not be used.

It's up to you to teach them what's right and what's wrong. You can't protect them forever and once they start school, it's over. Classmates will have older siblings and the younger kids will learn and repeat.

On the topic of Playgrounds - my wife and son just came back from our neighbourhood park. It appears there is a group that is there every evening around this time (kids and adults). They come in a huge group and usually have three or four women who sit next to the playground and chain smoke. I consider it way more inconsiderate to smoke around kids than to swear. Not to mention that in Toronto it is illegal (bylaw) to smoke within 9 metres of a playground.

I blame video games and shows like Family Guy...seriously, people don't even realize they are swearing these days, it's so ingrained in their everyday speech. I am constantly ragging on my spouse and children to stop swearing...

I remember taking my daughter to a book store and there were a couple of guys talking next to us - they were having a normal conversation, including F this and F that...I told them to mind their language around little kids and pointed to my daughter. They actually apologized, I'm pretty sure they didn't even think they were doing anything offensive.

I tried to teach my children that swearing is just for people who can't verbalize themselves in a more intelligent way. I actually don't swear very often, I save it for when it really counts.
