Under Block 16 codes, "dismissal" falls under M.
What you're looking for is A- "shortage of work."
If dismissal means termination with cause, your friend can expect some headaches in getting pogey down at Services Canada.

yup corporate reorganization is conscidered shortage of work. Did they put anything in the comments section? sometimes they yse the wrong code, but they describe the details in the comments section and the office can figure out the screw up.

hi.. sorry to dig up this older thread... does anyone know if you are technically fired if you can still be issued severance... or does severance imply being laid off? does the "M" code strictly mean being "fired" or can it also mean dismissal without cause?

Are you talking about legally or actually? The employer "fired" you but may put down "shortage of work" and gives you severance pay to avoid law suits. Happen all the time when large private companies go through "restructuring".
