Abandoned Car - Help?
Hello everyone, and thanks for clicking on this thread. I'm faced with a bit of a dilemma here. I happen to know of a couple of abandoned cars that have been standing for at least around a half a year and have grass growing all over them. The vehicles are not on my property but the property is for sale at this point... it used to be a commercial building but now it's abandoned. The grass around the cars covers them completely so I'm sure they are abandoned.
I would like to rescue and restore one of the cars. Now, I would like to find out about who owns it and contact the owner to buy it off him/her. The cars are unlocked, so I was able to get the VIN number - if anyone could please provide Carfax/Carproof, it would be very much appreciated. If you could do that, please PM me.
Now, I know the phone number of the real estate agent that is selling the building. Would you suggest I contact her and ask her for the information about cars? I would rather go to the owner directly but if anyone thinks this is a good option, please let me know. Also, regarding the Used Vehicle Report Package from the DMV: does anyone know how much it costs and if I would be able to get one in my situation?
Any general suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.Last edited by Mr D J; Jul 24th, 2009 at 11:52 PM.

Try taking the VIN to the MTO to see if they'll give you the name of the owner then I guess.
Maybe you can buy a used vehicle package.
Edit: I wonder if you can get the used vehicle package through the Service Ontario kiosks.Last edited by mazdubb; Jul 25th, 2009 at 12:00 AM.

Sounds exciting, service ontario would be a good place to start and it's good to hear the vin being clean. Shouldn't carfax or carproof have dates of the last time it was actually owned or serviced?
Keep this thread updated, and if you take possession of the vehicle, please take some photos as well._______________

The cars are late 80s Benz and Jeep. I found out who the owner of the Benz is. I'm interested in it because it is in a good shape and probably doesn't need much other than a little TLC. They have high mileage on them so they aren't really worth anything. I just need a car to get around at this point. Thanks for the help everyone

As for stolen title, I checked at the MTO - they are clean.

Hey, heh post a blog on how you restore it. It'll take a lot of engine, electrical and transmission work before you can consider "restoring it",it'll be like watching pimp ride without the crap and spanned over months instead of 30 minutes

If I can get ownership, I can try doing that. The problem is that my friend would be doing a lot of work on the car too and that would be a bit hard to document.
On a side note, I was able to get a hold of the owner and found out that the car was sold to a mechanic because of some electrical problem. For now, all we were able to figure out is that the starter coil is sparking and needs to be replaced, and we happen to have just the right one. As far as I understand, a car has to be registered under a new owner within 6 days after purchase. The mechanic that bought it clearly did not register it and it's standing in the middle of what is now pretty much a field. It hasn't been touched for at least a few months cause there are ants in the interior and quite a bit of dust on the inside. My question is: what are my options in this situation? Would I be able to get the person that the car is registered to sign the ownership over to me or do I have to get a hold of the mechanic?

Where did you get that from?
I can tell you straight up its incorrect. Your best bet is to find the contact of the mechanic. Most likely he will give it for free (a written letter as a proof) as he seems to abandon the car already. If it helps, explain him that the property is being sold.
