Acer to Dump 3 Million Laptops in Europe

Thought you might find this interesting:

"...Blame it on the popularity of tablet computers. Acer is reportedly going to dump millions of laptops on the European market so they can clear their supply chain of excess inventory and focus on items that really sell."

Maybe we should wait a bit, too - who knows - Brand New Acer netbooks for $149, anyone ??? :cheesygri

Fixed that for you.

It isn't that tablets are a better product, it's just a new concept that has huge market potential. A true laptop is still much more usefull, but the market is saturated with product, and almost all consumers already own one.

It's the fault of manufacturer's making products TOO RELIABLE these days, and the dissapearance of the WinTel upgrade cycle. From 1995 right to 2002, a computer was almost obsolete when you bought it, and the next windows os release (every 18-24 months) required expensive and marginally effective speed upgrades.

The market is languishing because the 'next big thing' hasn't been invented yet...

It's irrelevant how high or low the profit margin is on existing stock if they can't sell them.

I saw the Acer tablet and the quality of the screen is just horrendous, low brightness and low res for the size = poor quality. I haven't seen a screen come close to the Playbook's screen and it's much better quality and brightness compared to even iPad's.

As Blainehalmilton puts it, the market for consumer electronic is base on instant obsolescence.

If the device works too well and hardly break down. Then, there are no real reason for upgrade, renovate and replace.

To Reliable?? whattt the hell are you talking about? it's more like Manufactures are making products to crappy now. if you buy a basic computer from FS/BB you will be lucky if it lasts a year or 2 before something blows on it. Compare that to Years ago when people would buy a computer and it would last 5-10-15years without having any issues.

people need to get something through their heads. Products today do NOT last longer then they did 10 years ago or longer. They cut corners to cut costs that's why you can buy a desktop computer for $500 where 10-15years ago it would cost you $3,000 or at least that's one of the reasons.

That's not what failure stats say from industry insiders. The failure rate of components and systems are much lower today than years ago. Again what you're talking about is just incorrect perceptions that are spread by posts such as yours, much like the false believe cars from the past are safer and built like tanks :D

The cars part I agree with, new cars are safer since they take the energy from the crash to protect the passenger unlike the big old metal cars did.

However I don't agree with the computer thing. Stats don't mean anything especially when any company or person can have an influence on the results, We also don't know the specifics of the stats. Are they comparing it to computers 5 years ago? how are they testing it? lots of things can effect it.

+1

Cars and computers have to be build like a tank, in the past, because the technology is not available.

Until years later, when new innovation in production let manufacturer to produce smaller component to run faster, cooler and more efficiently.

What some see as high failure rate, might have to do with new product push to the market with no MTBF history.

As anything in a competitive market, the longer a product mature the less failure it will incur, as the defective part have been corrected in time.

If consumers perceived a brand to have high failure rate, that company won't be in business to sell their widget for long.

You'd be surprised -- and even Staples is carrying Asus these days, which is quite a huge step above the junk HP's, Acers, etc., that they mostly carried in the decade previous.

Plenty of technology improvements have increased reliability drastically. For instance, the chipsets on laptops run significantly less hot. Part counts have dropped dramatically, and along with that, far fewer solder joints are required. LED backlighting has practically eliminated LCD backlight failures. Solid state drives make hard drive failure obsolete. "Smart" power systems in laptops basically mean that, by replacing the AC adapter/power brick, and the battery, most of the charging circuitry for the laptop is replaced at the same time, improving system reliability with respect to parts that aren't traditionally all that reliable.

Also the desktop versus laptop performance premium has largely dissappeared or has been made irrelevant. 99% of business users wouldn't know the difference between a top-end desktop and a top-end laptop if you stuck them in a box and asked them to use them without knowing.
