I'm looking for some advice on which appliances I should buy for my new home. The house is currently under construction, and my wife and I have selected the following finishes in our kitchen:
- maple cabinets in espresso-brown with stainless steel handles
- granite-look countertops in mocha brown
- stone tiles in an off-white shade
We are now starting to look for appliances, but are having a disagreement over what colour to get.
I think that we should get stainless steel appliances, even though they cost a little more. The rationale is that stainless steel is the only colour that would work well with dark cabinets and light floors.
On the other hand, my wife says that black appliances would also work well with the decor. The selling point here is that black appliances are quite a bit cheaper than stainless, and are easier to keep clean too (no fingerprints to wipe off all the time).
In the hopes of resolving this disagreement and getting some inspiration, we have been to dozens of model homes to see what professional decorators do, but that didn't really help...
We saw a few models with dark cabinets and stainless appliances, but we were unable to find any models that had dark cabinets with black appliances. I have tried to use this fact to convince my wife that stainless is the only way to go (by saying that the professionally decorated models all had stainless appliances and none in black), but my wife still disagrees. She says that all the models had stainless appliances because they are the "in" thing right now.
I have also tried to search the web for pics of kitchens with dark cabinets and light floors, to try and see what colour appliances they've used, but I've had very little luck with this.
So I'm turning to RFD for advice. What do you people think would look best?
Thanks for you suggestions...

I'm not sure of the black/brown combo. If your kitchen is dominated by brown, black may not go well.
I know stainless has fingerprint issues, but last weekend I saw "stainless steel look" appliances - they are metallic grey but have the same finish as traditional appliances - no fingerprints.
I quite liked them and may actually pick some up myself. I saw them at Sears Whole Home.
I have also heard the next big thing is copper appliances (which would look GREAT in your kitchen as you've described it) but I haven't seen any in person yet.

Both you are your wife have valid points. Both stainless and black would be fine. Of all the appliances I've had (and I've had all colours) I found black the easiest to live with. I have stainless now and it's nice but it is more work and special cleaners are required so a bit of a pain to someone like me who hates cleaning in any form. If you are clean freaks you will find they are more work to keep spotless looking.
I doubt you will find many show homes with black appliances just because stainless is regarded as the most trendy and best for attracting buyers (which is the only reason why I went with them for this house which I will most likely sell while the appliances are still in top form).
Meanwhile, maybe this site will help. There are a few hundred pictures of kitchens with all manner of colour combinations. http://finishedkitchensslideshow.blogspot.com/

What kind of a vent hood do you have? If Stainless then go stainless. Black is nice and I did have Black at my old house for 2 reasons. 1 They were cheaper and 2. I wanted the whirlpool fridge and it had black handles and water dispenser which looks horrible with Stainless steel.
In my new house I went with SS Electrolux.

Personally, I'm not keen on this colour. The one model I saw looked like a cheap version of fake stainless and I'm not happy about that. On top of that, I think Sears is pushing this colour as a replacement for stainless, but they haven't priced it much cheaper than the real stuff, so the only real benefit would be the lack of fingerprints and a couple hundred in savings.
I don't even want to guess how expensive an entire appliance plated in copper would be. Probably double the cost of stainless steel!
Thanks for your input and suggestion!

I don't think they are real copper, a copper-look probably for mainstream buyers (but I have seen pics of the real thing, and they tarnish like mad and are $$$, many are saying the tarnish is stylish but that's probably because they gave up on keeping them clean!)
JennAir has a line of oil-rubbed bronze appliances that you could check out - they are brown which may put too much brown in your kitchen, but I have seen pictures of these and they are very impressive. Not sure of pricing.
If you want a simple answer stainless vs black, I'd go stainless. I thought I'd also throw in some creative options for you. I'm sure whichever you choose will look great.

Dustbunny - thanks so much for that link. I went through the first 60 pictures or so, but didn't see anything with black appliances and dark cabinets. I'll have to look some more when I get home from work.
Also thanks for your input regarding fingerprints on stainless. We are definitely not clean freaks, and hate cleaning just as much as you do, so I'm not too excited about wiping fingerprints away all the time. We don't have any kiddies yet, but we plan on living in this house for a long, long time, so I'm sure that we'll be dealing with little kid's fingerprints eventually. We also have a lot of family parties that always end up in the kitchen, so I can just see myself sitting there at the dining table and getting quietly irritated while people touch my stainless door and leave behind fingerprints.
I guess that I'm going to have to take a long look at black appliances before we make up our minds. We actually have black appliances in our house right now, but they match perfectly with our decor, so we love them...the thing is I'm not sure about how well they'll go in our new kitchen. Argh
antman56 - the hoodvent is being supplied by our builder, and it will be the standard white piece of crap with two speeds and a light. We will buy a new fan at the same time as we get the new appliances, so it'll either be black or stainless too.
And I totally understand what you're saying about water dispensers looking funny on stainless steel fridges - for some reason they look really out of place to me. Luckily, my wife and I have already agreed that no matter what colour fridge we buy, it will not have a water dispenser. We're going to stick with a Brita water jug and an ice-cube tray!

The new "copper" colored appliances are not actually new to some of us old enough to remember when they were in vogue. We consider them retro, LOL! They are actually a brown color. I'm sure the harvest gold and avocado colors will be back as well.
Now OP, I can tell you that as we are repcing appliances and redoing the kitchen I am doing a mix of black and SS. I currently have a light floor and it will be a light cork when it's replaced. We are replacing our cabinet doors and the new ones will be 2 different tones. Maple on the bottom and expresso stained maple on the top with SS long handles. I have an absolute black granite countertop. I have a neutral, beige tones, polished marble backsplash. I have chosen a black range and a SS OTR microwave so far. At this point I think I will go with a SS or Clean Steel fridge. When the time comes to replace my dishwasher it will probably be black as it sites beside my range. We've been told by several designers that you can definitely mis SS and black quite easily and they actually recommend it in some instances depending on the layout of the kitchen.

Hmmm...thanks CSK'sMom! I never actually thought about mixing the two different colours. That might be an interesting idea for us to look into. It would save us some money and would be a pretty good compromise instead of just doing everything in the same colour. I'll ask my wife what she thinks about this tonight.

We were faced with the same dilemma. We chose espresso maple cabinets in our kitchen with brushed steel handles. We found a cheap black Samsung fridge with Sears for $800 so the rest of the appliance also had to be black.
I searched a bit on the 'net and some people are saying that black will not clash will anything. Black appliances are also easier to maintain compared to stainless steel. And as a reference, the photo below of someone's kitchen with black appliances and dark cabinets pretty much alleviated my worries:
Please note: this is not mine, I got it off the gardenweb forums and just showing everyone for reference.
I think if you have enough subtle lighting (i.e. under cabinet lighting) and lighter floors, everything will even out. Our kitchen pretty much matches that color scheme.

I would go with stainless, but it may not be completely stainless, SS and Black would be nice.
