After a root canal

How long is my tooth going to be painful enough I can't eat or keep my mouth closed? How fragile is the tooth? I won't be able to get it crowned for another week and a half. Dentist isn't open until Tuesday so I can't ask them.

It's kind of different for everyone. For me the pain lasts a few days, but other people I know are totally fine after the work. I just seem to be sensitive to dental work. Taking Advil right after the work is done seems to be common advice. It keeps the inflammation down really well (better than some other pain killers).

I haven't got crowns on either of my root canals. I just had permanent fillings put in because they are both mollars. They won't last forever, but the one has been there for 5 years now. I just can't afford the crowns. My insurance covers the root canal, but only 40% of a crown since they count it as cosmetic.

So to answer you question, you should be fine with the temp filling until they put the crown on.

i walked out the same as if it were a filling. once the freezing wore of, was good to go. Im not sure if a crown does anything more then looks. I dont think it will help with your healing?

I've had 3 root canals and frankly I didn't really have any pain from any of them. As far as a crown goes, if you don't get one, you can be assured that after a few years, the tooth will break so it's not wise to get a root canal without following up with the crown. Trust me, I know of what I speak as two of my root canals did not have crowns and the teeth are no longer with me. The tooth becomes far too fragile without a crown.

I'm under the impression that a root canal'd tooth is extremely brittle, and a crown makes it much stronger/more resilient. I didn't know crowns were expensive... paid 800$ (no insurance) for 4 canal root canal.

Doctor prescribed my Apo-ibuprofen 600mg and Amoxicillin, so I'm taking those for pain/inflammation/etc. It's been about 40 hours and it's extremely painful still.

keep popping those ibuprofen every 6 hours, gloaming should be back soon Crowns are at least $850, but if you find a real old dentist they might do a prefab stainless steel for cheap

I'm curious as to why you're having pain as in my 3 root canals I never had any pain whatsoever. Seems rather odd that you'd have pain. Best get it looked at.

It's not a stinging pain or anything, but it hurts whenever I touch the tooth. It feels like there's a lot of pressure around the tooth if that makes any sense.

Holy ****! Are you sure the crown isn't included with the root canal cost? My father had a 1 canal root canal back in September and the TOTAL for surgery + crown was under 400$.

If crowns were so expensive I would have opted for tooth extraction versus a root canal. :/

I had a root canal in dec and because I had maxed out my limit on insurance, I waited til feb to have the crown. it was fine, but I was careful about chewing on that side.

I had no pain whatsoever the first day but the second and third nights I woke up with pain in my teeth, I think from grinding my teeth on the root canal.. dont know.

FYI - mine was damnnnnn expensive.. I paid $800 for root canal and over $1000 for the crown (solid gold). lasts about 20 years though and my tooth looks perfect now.

OH and fyi, I asked the dentist about tooth extraction as the crown etc was so expensive, although thats cheap, do you really want a big gap in your mouth?? a dental implant is over $4000 apparently.

I would have just had it extracted before the root canal if I knew it was gonna be 2000$~ altogether. How structurally sound is a root canal'd tooth with a permanent filling versus a crown?

crown option: u need a post 250$ and a crown 800$

implant (close to crown option but for those who have lost their tooth, u have just saved it with a root canal): 2500$ implant (consists of similar post but post is a screen and a crown is screwed over it)

i am deciding whether i want an implant or just leave it missing a 2nd molar as is.. decisions decisions

I had relief of pain following a root canal. Somethings not right; you should get it checked. I think a crown is advised after a root canal to protect and stabilize the now dead tooth. Mine was done about 15 years ago and still going strong.

About 1/4 of my RCT patients have post op pain- We were always told that the best predictor of post op pain is the preop pain experienced. Keep taking the Ibuprofen, the tooth should settle once the inflammation settles down. If your tooth is very sensitive to bite on, then you need to get the bite adjusted on the temp filling.

You don't necessarily need a post into the tooth, only if the tooth is really broken down, otherwise a core filling will be sufficient.

If you were Rx. the Amoxil, the tooth is likely pretty infected and it could take up to 2-3 weeks for the pain to be completely gone.

The tooth is painful only if I touch it. When I bite down I don't feel it, but sometimes at night I'll wake up having accidentally touched the tooth with my tongue. The pain only lasts as long as I'm touching it: the moment I stop touching it is the moment the pain stops. Doesn't feel pain with liquids, hot or cold.

I ate at Mandarin like 3 weeks ago, and cracked my 1st molar (I think, it's 2 teeth from 3rd molar). Tooth was almost split all the way down. Dentist told me it had considerable decay and they could either root canal it or extract it.

As for preop pain, I felt very little. It's much worse right now than it's ever been. I'm taking Novamoxin 500mg Amoxicillin (Tyihydride) Cap 500mg and Apo-Ibuprofen 600mg tab, but these were prescribed a few days prior to the root canal. I was given Apo-Triazo 0.25mg (three caplets) prior to surgery for pain I'm guessing. I felt absolutely no pain during the procedure and to be honest don't remember anything. Apparently I was in the dentist chair for about 2 and a half hours, but it felt like 20 maybe 30 minutes.
