AGED TIRES: A DRIVING HAZARD *video from ABC News*
I didn't know about this one but I'll be sure to check it tomorrow.
We purchase our new tires a few months ago in Vaughan. I'm hoping that the tires are not that old.

In Canada we do not get much sun compared to a southern US state so I assume our tires should last longer since it is sun that damages the rubber.

I can't watch the video right now so I'm not sure what it shows, but yeah the compound degrades with time for sure. I've seen people have to replace tyres far before the tread was done simply because they drove so little that the tyres went bad before they wore out.
If you buy tyres from a reputable manufacturer (Goodyear/Dunlop, Michelin/BFG, Bridgestone/Firestone, etc.) their warranties are pretty good usually around 6 years or so on the tyre materials/compound. So if you suspect a problem with your tyres due to age of the compound and you're still in the warranty you can at least get them replaced (albeit pro-rated I'm sure).
