This is going to be a large thread.

I will be the first to ask how this phone compares to the Xiaomi Mi A1 5x 4/64?

Redmi 5 Plus has
-Bigger battery
-less ram (assuming the 3GB model)
-less storage (assuming 32GB model)
-Single rear camera
-18:9 screen
-lacks capacitive buttons
-runs MIUI skin on top of android OS
-Micro USB port

Mi A1 has
-more ram
-more storage
-faster android OS updates
-close to stock Android OS
-dual rear camera
-USB C port

Stressed...... I was just about to purchase a mi max for $250 US (all in with fast shipping, case, etc.) from allie express, now you made me second guess. Any thoughts -- this one (Redmi 5.99 for $178 US) with 4G OR mi max which is bigger but on 3G/spotty 4G.

I was going to buy the Redmi 5 plus, then I changed my mind after seeing the following review mentioning the 5 plus had worse GPS accuracy and viewing angels compared to the cheaper Redmi Note 4x. So I decided to get the Redmi Note 4x instead. Of course, all these issues might be fixed through a future software patch; but who knows when that's coming out.

you're aware the note 4x is missing Canadian bands?

It has 4 (1700/2100MHz) and 7 (2600MHz), but it's missing 17 (700MHz), so make sure you know what your provider's towers in your area use.

I have always wondered. What happens if your phone needs to be repaired ? You send it back to China and wait for weeks to get it back ?

Weeks... months would be more accurate. One month to get there, one month for them to repair/replace and another month to ship back. 3 months minimum...

Would this be much of an upgrade over a Mi Note 3 Pro? I've had mine 18 months now and have been very pleased with it, but the battery life is starting to get noticeably worse so I'm starting to think about an upgrade....

I've been looking for a China phone to replace my current phone at the moment, but I was looking at the Umidigi S2 Lite - Does anyone have an opinion or a comparison to the Note 5 here?

Most of the time you are out of options. Although I have been able to get one of these Chinese sellers to repair a tablet years ago. It took many emails and I had to pay for shipping.

Going to wait for the "Indian" (aka Global) version of Redmi Note 5 - https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/01/25/x ... ng-leaked/
Redmi Note 5 Specifications and Pricing
The Redmi Note 5 is speculated to feature an integrated metallic chassis with nano-injection molding antenna design. It is rumored to house a 5.99-inch screen that will produce 18:9 aspect ratio. Like the Redmi 5 Plus, it is likely to support FHD+ resolution.

The Redmi Note 5 could be the first Redmi Note series phone to feature dual camera setup that is speculated to include a 16-megapixel primary sensor that will be coupled with a 5-megapixel sensor. For shooting selfies, it will be equipped with an 8-megapixel selfie camera. The MIUI 9 flavored Android Nougat OS will be available pre-installed on the Redmi Note 5. The smartphone will also carry support for facial recognition.

The base model of the Redmi Note 5 featuring 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage is rumored to be powered by Snapdragon 630. The higher model that will be driven by Snapdragon 636 chipset is expected to feature 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. Both the variants are rumored to be respectively priced at 1,499 Yuan (~$237) and 1,799 Yuan (~$284).
Loving my Redmi Note 4, hate the constant 18:9 reference... People, it's 2:1... You get points deducted if you wrote 18:9 on a high school math test.

Torn between getting this or the Note 4... this one has a higher res screen, but I hate phones with software only buttons. Tough choice.

People call it 18:9 to make it more obvious that it's a wider aspect that 16:9.

Sure marketing BS. If true then it should be 16:9 would have been called 5.33:3 in order to show that it's wider than 4:3
