Which causes the phones to slowdown to a crawl and become unusable. 5 year old phones probably don't want the latest software.

The question was who is doing this, the answer was Apple :) I agree with you, that you don't want the latest soft on such an old phone, it will be useable and stable but not fast. I don't think you can install on any Android phone which is 5 years old latest OS.

I am thinking giving this a try, as a backup phone.

Planning on buying this for use on Rogers, and to use on China Mobile when I visit the country.

Redmi 5:
FDD LTE B5:850 /B8:900 /B3:1800 /B1:2100 /B7:2600 B4:1700 /B20:800
TD LTE B38:2600 / B40:2300

Trying to understand the bands here -- can confirm this works for China Mobile?

China Mobile LTE Bands: B38/B39/B40/B41
Rogers LTE Brands: B4/B7/B17

Based on that information you're good for both.

I highly doubt it's a Xiaomi official store, but looks like they sell a butt load of phones.
Reviews are favorable as well.
I ordered.
And don't forget eBates

It doesn't let me select anything. Keeps on saying select a color.
Anybody else has the same problem.

In CAD, probably a bit less ($25 for DHL + less than $20 for tax/duties). But you won't pay anything extra if you choose Free Shipping, you'll just wait for 1-3 months.

I have note 3 , 4 and will be getting note 5 pro.
You mean 636

I would like to try Xiaomi, but I'm worried about spyware on Xiaomi phones.

Guess it depends on use, for me as long as I can drop pictures and music on the SDCard I am more than good with 32GB

Really good phone. Hopefully I can snatch this up for ~$150 someday.

Update....
So i got my phone...it took 26 days to arrive, but it only shipped 8 days after purchase due to Chinese New Year backlog

Phone build quality is awesome. Definitely has a premium feel to it
Updated OTA to latest MIUI with zero problems

I needed to manually add Rogers LTE APN as only the 3G was registered. Getting LTE speeds now

Getting used to MIUI, but so far so good. It's actually a pretty nice
UI is completely English. I have yet to see any Chinese characters anywhere

Overall very impressed with a very recent phone that cost me $192 (CDN)

I did however get dinged with a Canadian Border Agency processing fee and taxes ($18).
I have ordered many things overseas through China/Singapore Post and this is the very first time I had to pay anything

If anyone is interested is this phone the seller is having a sale which starts in about 17 hrs...states $178.50 (CAD)
