All required stpes after purchasing a vehicle(registration, plates etc)

I would like to know everything that I would need to do for buying a car and getting it insuraed. Im assuming I need to have the car first to insure it. So how does the registering and the plates, pink slips, etc work out? A checklist type answer would be great. Thanks!

This is what you need to do

1.) You have to buy insurance ( so you just register what car your buying, model, year)
2.) You got to a Ontario Drivers & Liscence area to pick up an "Owner's Manual/ Kit"Costs about $20 bucks ( best thing is to have your VIN # of your vehicle)
3.) Get the package, bring it to whoever your buying the vehicle from and have them fill out the worth etc blah blah blah )
4.) Pay the government PST of whatever you got the car or what they declared it for
5.) $70 bucks for the sticker ( 1 year etc) + 10 dollars per plate i think
You can get temporary plates till you can put them on i believe

you've mis aligned the steps a little bit but good job

The package is supposed to be purchased by the seller for 20..they're supposed to have it ready when the vehicle is being viewed by potential buyers.

the buying of insurance takes place between the time you buy the car and pick it up

normally you'd give a deposit of 1000 or 500....and tell the seller you'll pick it up in 2 days or something like that

in those 2 days you'd get your insurance done

The "used vehicle package" can be purchased by either the seller or buyer, but it must be submitted in order for ownership transfer to take place at the registrations office.

If you just want to transfer the ownership, all you need is certification and emissions papers. The insurance is only needed if you want to get plates (which you probably do).

You can also get temporary liscense plates ($15 I think) to drive the car home the day you take posession of the car.

To get the car registered (ownership transferred) go to a ministry of transportation office, and submit: signed ownership, used vehicle package, certification (safety), emissions papers, and insurance papers. Also bring cheque/visa/MC to pay for taxes.

Usually they aren't too fussy about the Used vehicle package. They'll just make you buy it when you try to transfer ownership (even without all the signatures and prices and stuff).

No, the owner doesn't have to be there, as long as you have the ownership.
It's actually kind of a stupid process.
In all reality, it wouldn't be hard for someone to come along, steal your ownership and have the car transferred into their name and act like you sold it to them.
They then steal the car, get plates of their own, insurance, etc. and they're set.

The original owner of the car never has to be present.

True, but I still wonder if that person would ever see their car again.
The person that stole the car just has to say that he bought it legally.
At that point the police are back away and tell them to take it to civil court for a judge to decide who is the rightful owner of the car.

I'm actually surprised this doesn't happen more, or maybe it does and we just don't hear about it.

Unless you have reason to believe it's stolen, don't worry about it.

You need the ownership, a used car package, proof of safety and e-test (I think MOT keeps this info on file) and that's it.

Plates are $20 for the pair, $74 for the validation sticker for a year - prorated to your birthday month (could be more or less depending on your birthday).

Actually bill of sale isn't required for transfer of ownership.
It may have been required in the past, but it isn't any longer.

Just curious... do you HAVE to obtain insurance for the car before they give you the plates? What if you just want to transport the vehicle from the owner's house to your house and then deal with insurance later on.
