The correct consensus on this device is that it isn't as good (i.e. worse longevity and barely better performance) than the 480gb device for $130.

Your information is incorrect, MX500 is indeed a much better SSD, in the old days, no doubt MLC was better than TLC, but 3D TLC technology has caught up in recent years, it is not much difference between them now. Not only MX500 is newer with the latest 64 layer 3D TLC NAND, it is a bit faster and more features than BX300. In term of longevity and reliability, look at the specs, MX500 is actually better than the BX300, that is the reason Crucial is giving the MX500 5 years warranty instead of 3 years in the BX300.

MX500 vs BX300
MTTF 1.8 million hours -->> 1.5 million hours
Endurance 180TBW -->> 160TBW

I'll eat my own words. Thank you for clarifying. Now it's up to each buyer to determine whether these advantages and modest size increase are worth the extra 30 dollars.

No doubt MX500 is better than the BX300. But for most people the difference is negligible.

For people that already got the BX300 keep it and save the $30.

If you want a real performance boost get a NVMe SSD.
There's a sucker born every minute.
