Phew, scared me for a second. I thought that I missed out on huge price drop. I paid $786 + tax a few months back, but just double checked and that was the 300s (app enabled) version.

That's the correct filter. There is a filter on each side of the unit.
So does this mean it's $260/year to change the filter?

I don't have the answer, but hopefully the recommended filter change intervals only apply to a unit that is being run 24/7 and that if you are using it periodically that you could get a much longer lifespan between filter changes.

What's the goal of this... is the air that bad in our homes that we need something like this ? How can I find out if I need this... and then verify that the air is better after ?

Does anyone honestly NEED anything that they find on RFD? That word gets used so often on here when the word that should be used in its place is WANT.

The main reason that I am considering it is for wildfire season. Seems that it is going to be more and more common each summer now out in BC.

There are lots of information available on this topic. Indoor air pollution can be worse than outdoor air and can pose some health issues.

We've found that at minimum it helps to reduce allergies.

Today you can pretty much find info for everthing.
Took a quick read.. and aside from the radon testing which I will look into the article did not convince me that we need this.

I think more importantly is how many of us regularly change/wash their furnance filters... I will admit I wash mine maybe 3 times a year when I should be doing it more ..

I'm in Toronto BTW.

This is true, to each their own! If you didn't know you "needed" it before, you can probably continue to do without it. For myself, we have pets that my spouse is allergic to and it virtually eliminated all symptoms.
