How does one figure out whehther the filters will fit in which fridges? Or are these external filters that you hook up to the water line down in the basement sort of thing?

These are in-fridge filters. Just take out the filter - it will have a model number on it. Check amazon's filter listing and see if it says if its compatible. For example, the samsung one listed earlier says the following:

"Premium replacement water filter for Samsung DA29-00020B"

I was thinking that prices would be more similar to brita filter pricing. Guess I was wrong.

Does anyone know how frequently one would need to replace these things? looking to pick some up for my GE fridge

My fridge had a little light on it that would change colour when it was time to change the filter. The thing is - it would go EARLY. I usually just waited till the water started tasting like tap water. That is, until I realized that we'd been effectively drinking tapwater for weeks and nobody complained, so I just bought a bypass filter instead. One time purchase, never have to worry about new filters again :)

These tiers are funny. The more you pay the less poisoned you get.
