I've always wanted a set of these. Had no idea they were so expensive! Is there any cheaper alternative for adjustable dum bells that won't break the bank?

don't get these plastic toys - they don't feel solid at all... if you want adjustable dumbbells - get powerblocks, it's about the same price, only draw back to those is the limited range of motion. However, it does have some other benefits - since your wrist is somewhat cuffed in, it feels more secure when you're doing press with heavier weights, etc.
FYI - there are lots of fake bowflex out there, so be careful if you're planning on looking on kijiji or cl.Last edited by mic2074; May 1st, 2012 at 03:57 PM.

I remember reading that one disadvantage of Powerblocks is that due to the design, your wrists hit the side bars at times. The Bowflex doesn't have anything to hit your wrists against, so it may be easier to handle for some exercises.

Over the past 6 months or so, I have been contemplating (whilst saving) on which ones to get.
After reading many a review, I'll be going with the http://Powerblock Sport 5.5 Dumbbells 2.5-55lbs pair
The general consensus seems to be that the PB's are just more comfortable and sturdy. Additional weight is available if need be, however, unless your name is Lou Ferrigno (I'm showing my age) you can probably do without it.
Also, with adjustments in the 2.5lb range vs Selectech's 5lb range, the weight increments with PB's are also smaller which allows the option of minor adjustments as you build strength.
The Powerblock Sport 5.5 Dumbbells are available at http://http://www.treadmillfactory.c...x.php?do=click for $350 CAD. Shipping is about $22, (you can add to cart and input your postal code to find out) and considering that there are a few fairly convenient locations around in Ontario (Markham, Toronto, Mississauga, London) you could probably just pick them up to save on the shipping cost.
Fitness Depot in Pickering also sells a few models.
Great post by the way.

ditto..
you should consider spending a few more bucks and get the urethane coated ones... the older models you will hear the metal clanking together all the time. One way to fix it, which I did, after reading about it online was to put duck tape on the metal plates... and since the U-50 and U-90 stage one are the same price - get the U-90, better resale value with the possibility of stage two, if you decide to sell later.

I have met some guy selling a bowflex out of a truck before. I found him from kijiji. I compared the good with some photos I printed out online. Guess what? They were different. I think they were Chinese knockoffs, even though they looked very convincing.
Buyers beware....
If I am to hold 100lbs above my head, I want to be sure it's the real thing.Last edited by avonord; May 1st, 2012 at 08:28 PM.

Another thing to point out from the comparison reviews that i've been reading, is the length of the two types of dumbells.
The selectech's are around 17"s, the PB's are around 13". A significant difference when doing certain exercises. On top of that, the Bowflex's are 17" regardless of what weight you use, where as the length of the PB's are determined by the amount of weight's/plates that are required for your excercise. Big big + in my opinion.
One review that i watched on Youtube, stated that at 10lbs, the width is only around 9"'s
Wow +1 for pointing that out. I had no idea about the Urethane ones. Now i'm wondering if i should get the U-50's or 90's. I like the idea of adding value with the 90's by allowing the option of expanding the weight to a potential 125lbs, but i'm a beginner. Can't see myself getting that hardcore within the near future. lol. If only the 90's had continuous 2.5 increments as well.
LOL. Indeed.

For anyone in the market for Adjustable Dumbbells, another option to consider is the Ironmaster Quick Lock adjustable dumbbells. Highly recommend looking for these on Craigslist or Kijiji. You can also buy the adjustable Kettlebell handles and use the same plates. Brand new, this set is a little pricey (especially buying from Canada) compared to the deal the OP posted but either way it's a lot of Money and there's more than price to consider when investing money in weights. They all have their own Pros/Cons and you should do your full research before deciding which option is best for you.

they're still not as convenient as PB's. They're more suit to someone that is more hardcore, that doesn't adjust the weight as often... they are definitely the sturdiest of all adj db's.

These have been as low as $239.99 from Amazon.COM http://lightningdrops.com/product/B001ARYU58 Yes you have to factor in extra effort to buy it from them and you have to wait until and if the price drops back to $239.99 again. All in all $349 from Amazon.CA is not bad but you can get a better deal if you're willing to wait and go through the extra effort.
