these speakers went for $400 on sale in the US, so $599 is much more reasonable price than the regular MSRP (Canadians get screwed on the pricing of these)

Should be great speakers...too bad they don't offer any other finish except for the plain grey

I want these speakers bad, but my wife will kill me if I spend any more money on AV gear.

In terms of physical differences, this is a true 3 way speaker, vs 2 way for the Q100.

The Q100 would compete more directly with the cheaper ELAC Debut line.

Can someone chime in on the Elac UB51 vs Yamaha NX-N500? I realise that they are completely different purposes where the yamaha has a lot of built in features... but in terms of sound quality and value.. which one would you pick?

This deal is also currently on BestBuy.ca through a 3rd party:

Anyone want to comment on the KEF Q100B's frequency response vs ELAC UB51's? ( KEF: 49Hz - 40kHz vs ELAC: 46Hz to 25kHz) Pretty close on the low end considering the ELAC has dedicated "balanced" woofer.

Personally, I prefer forward ported bookshelf speakers, especially when sitting relatively close.

how's ELAC's 400 Watts Subwoofer, Black (DS10EQ1-BK)? good enough for a 15x15ft living room?

depends on how much bass you expect! It should be fine for most people

It's not going to beat a comparably priced SVS PB1000 in terms of deep bass (the PB1000 has a much larger cabinet and is a more efficient sub).

Most of these small subs like this Elac are much easier to hide and have some fancy features (which adds to the cost) like phone Apps. Most of it is unnecessary if you are using a AV receiver with good EQ.

I'm reading a lot of reviews stating these speakers are 4 ohm nominal and sound better with bigger amplifiers (guessing over 100w rms)... those receivers with less than that may not get the performance being raved about these speakers... ie. dull trebles and highs and muddy bass, muted midrange...

I was looking into Yamaha HS8s, is it worth spending more for those or are these almost as good?

UB5 is the actual name, but UB51-BK is the designated model number

I'm confused because I read the following article:

http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-s ... nd-system/

And they claim their upgrade/more expensive pick is the KEF speakers over this ELAC set.

Depends. Advertised watts aren't created equal. It's more about current and quality of watts. My 30w NAIM amplifier will smoke many 100w+ amps. I'll be trying these speakers on an LFD Silver Signature integrated amp. It only has 50w, but all the speakers I've tried on it sounded fabulous.
