I think they'll ding you with a shipping fee to return it.

Since always but it depends what you select as the return reason. If you choose "not satisfied with product " or "doesn't work as described" or something like that it's free. If you choose "changed mind" or "ordered wrong item" or whatever, they will charge shipping.

Is there big changes from the first version? And can you still root the newer version?

The built in light is absolutely wonderful.
I upgraded years ago, but I still remember using my Kindle Keyboard with it's lighted cover. Ugh, that awkward light that popped out of the corner and didn't even light up your entire screen properly. Having a uniform front-lit screen like in the Paperwhite is fantastic.

Did anyone else ever own the Kindle Keyboard with lighted cover? lol

Never used a kindle before, can I put my own ebook files on there? Or only buy from the Amazon books?

Yeah you can, but the Kindle can't read EPUB. So if your books are in that format, they just need to be converted to another format that the Kindle can read, like .mobi or amazon's own format .azw3.
Converting is an extremely easy thing to do. I recommend the program Calibre.

It can even be set to automatically convert all incoming formats (PDF, TXT, etc) to convert.... watch the tutorial video, well worth the time.

It can download the summary and covers for you as well.

Excellent app.
