Haha I know right. I was surprised they did not keep their Black Friday tradition.

I have some V-Moda m100s - would these be a lateral move or an upgrade ?

I would keep the m100s. However, I do enjoy open back headphones more.

These are open back, comfortable and suited for home use. M100s are closed with more base and more rugged. I returned the 598s and got the M100s a few years ago. Bought a pair of similar Phillips for home use.

The Philips often sell for $60 and a comparable to these.

Well the one without a mic is more expensive and not on sale, wouldn't even consider getting... you can just mute the microphone yourself when you don't want to use it.

Sennheiser Game one's are I believe a lower end sennheiser model like the 558 or 518 so these will sound better than that, but the mic quality should be abit better on the game one.

Yes you can, but you would have to mute the mic that comes with the 598s in windows. It doesn't look like it has a physical mute button with it

I have both shp9500 and 598se. They are very different headphones. If you plan on just getting one and use it until it is torn up, go with shp9500. If you want to discover what audiophile is all about (and never go back. It's an absolute black hole), 598 is a good starting point.

I have both and prefer the open one. More confortable and better sound. Of course, the sound is leaking alot so, I would not recommend them for the office. That is where I use my closed one. It is not a very big upgade but it is one nonetheless if you don't mind the leaking part.

how are these compared to at the ath-m40? I had the m50s, and liked em, but one side stopped working. got the m40s but didnt really like the lack of bass, so returned it.
