Looks like a great deal. Would buy if I hadn't picked up the 8TB versions a few months ago.

Great deal! I still have 3TB left on my NAS so I’m going to wait for the 12 to 14 TBs to go mainstream.

Remember to apply the 3.3v mod if you plan on shucking this and using it internally in a NAS etc.

Good to be aware, but not needed in all cases though, like in my DS918+.

Maybe I should have said, if you plug it in and it doesn't work, then you need to do the 3.3v mod :)

I personally has had bad experience with Seagate so I only buy WD and HGST drives now.

Are these just standard 5400 RPM drives?

I believe you only get the WD Reds in these which are 5400rpm. You are thinking of the Red Pros that are 7200rpm.

I see this from groups of people advocating against both companies.

I have two Seagate Barracuda hard drives running, going on 7 years now. Anecdotally I'd say just go with the company offering better specs for a better price.

I guess people just have bad luck with Seagate. Personally, I always use both of them in pair rather than having all the same brand since you just never know if there is bad batch.

From the non-anecdotal data, most models from most brand companies perform similarly. There was an abysmal model from Seagate that should have been recalled, but that was a one-off and hasn't been repeated to my knowledge.

There's a good compilation of data from backblaze that was re-compiled by another guy highlighting this. Sorry to be vague with sourcing, but it should be easy enough to find.

For anyone that shucked this particular line of WD Elements drives, do you need to modify the 3.3v pin for use in a desktop/NAS ?

I was looking up what people were talking about with the 3.3v pin and thought, couldn't you just use a marker on the pin?
