The Kindle gives you instant access to pay for and download books. However, as far as I know, you are locked into the Amazon format. I have the Sony E-reader and I love it. It supports pretty much all the ebook formats and is super easy to use. You can also download books like you would MP3 music files...you can decide where you download them...and the cost or non-cost involved.
It also gets my 10 year old son reading more as well.

For those wondering, the coverage map shows both 2G and 3G service, the carrier is probably Rogers so plan accordingly. The kindle does not have wifi.
