The show was really good. I read the first 2 comics and the show seems pretty much faithful so far

LOL agreed, great first episode. I've added it on my PVR schedule every week
Interesting storyline there, wonder if the wife has been cheating on him with his best friend/partner before or after the zombie whole Apocalypse started. Can't wait for ep 2!

One question remains... how long was he in the coma for?
I tried hard to pay attention to dates and times but nothing was said when it happened and for how long it's been going on for.

I can't recall when the zombies appeared smart. What scene are you referring to? One thing I noticed they aren't exactly sprinters like they are in 28 days later and do more of the "zombie walk". The typical shot to the brain kills them (decapitation as well). I am sure we'll be learning their "zombie rules" as we watch more episodes including how the infection spreads by bites, how long to become a zombie, etc.

first would be the black dude's wife trying to open the door, i don't think zombies can do that....
second the lil girl picking up the teddy bear
and the part where zombies climb on top of the tank
I guess we all have different views of zombie but i am referring to slow, brain dead zombie

I think they have some sort of residual memory of who they were - I sure wouldn't call them smart or intelligent though.

They're not smart but they do seem a bit smarter than your typical zombie. They appear to have some residual memories of their past lives. OTOH, it doesn't seem to take much to keep them away. Those curtains blocking the windows didn't seem that light-proof (as they were in I Am Legend) yet the dad and son seemed pretty secure in their home while hundreds of the zombies were outside.
I thought the dad sniping zombies from his second floor was really dumb. They could have attacked the house en masse and gotten in.
How cool would it be to be an extra on this show getting to wear zombie makeup and lurch around and get paid for it!

Well for a while Zombies were defined as brain-dead and slowed by rigor mortis. Then they came up with fast, crazy zombies (28 days laters, dawn of the dead remake). Now they have "smart" zombies (Walking Dead, Land of the Dead). I think the idea of zombies retaining a bit of information and maybe their memories/personality is much scarier than the other two.
The only thing I didn't like about the episode was that they mishandled Lori's relationship with Shane. They revealed it too quickly. In the comics, it was one of the main dilemmas Rick had to deal with while trying dealing with the group and the the zombie situation as a whole. It was one of the driving plotlines in the story and wasn't fully resolved until many issues in.

I totally agree.. I was hoping they'd keep the relationship ambiguous for a while rather than spoonfeeding it to the audience. I also didn't think it was necessary for the writers to reveal Lori/Carl until after Atlanta, like they do in the comics.
Great episode though, and its looking to be one great show. I also think they nailed the look of many of the characters (ie Dale, Andrea(?), Glenn, etc).

(Rick shoots his wife)
"Rick you killed your zombie wife!"
"She was a zombie?"

they're brain dead zombies but they still have a little bit of memory such as opening doors, or climbing things

They're still the same old brain dead zombies that first came to be... thus walking around like morons at night time... I wouldn't classify opening a door or anything making them "smart" like the zombies in land of the dead (that shoot guns? i believe...)

I think opening doors and using guns and tools are definitely smarter than traditional Romero zombies. Those zombies only knew how to feed and responded to stimuli.

Agreed. I thought that was incredibly stupid as the noise should have attracted all of the zombies towards the house and based on the sheer numbers could have busted through a windows or door. I was half expecting a confrontation/fight there but they sort of just went to the next scene and forgot about it.
Along with that, surprised that he ran out of gas so quick. I'll assume that most of the useful supplies have already been taken so he just didn't have much gas to begin with and not much to find. Oh well all we can do now is nitpick as much as we want until the next episode!

He fired shoots to get his zombie wife to come back to the house - pretty dumb and a total waste of bullets.
