AMD 785g chipset doesn't support multichannel lpcm
I was going to purchase a Gigabyte motherboard with the new AMD 785g chipset for a htpc. I just found out that the chipset doesn't support multi-channel lpcm even though it has an on-board Ati 4200 video chip. I'm glad I saw this article before buying the board: http://www.anandtech.com/weblog/showpost.aspx?i=629

It's not exactly news (well I found out last week from some dude here LOL), AMD really really blows on this one.
I really like the $30 ATI4350, so a fix is not such a big deal. But I like onboard IGP as well...

I'm using an Ati 4550 in one htpc and wanted to build a 2nd unit for my other television. Yes, the 4350 would be a cheap solution but I was hoping to build a virtually silent system.

For ddr2 users, the geforce 8200 chipset still remains the best choice for HTPC builds, IMHO.

There are fanless 4350 and even 4550's available.

I don't have a surround sound set-up, so this may sound ignorant, but do a lot of people have a 7-speaker set-up for HT? I'm not sure how important this 7.1 lpcm capability is or not to an HTPC. I'm assuming you can't do a 5.1 set-up either with the 780g or 785g chipset?

You can do 5.1 and it works amazing. I have 780G based HTPC with a 5.1 setup and its perfect as far as I'm concerned. No idea what the big fuss is about.

The Gigabyte 4350 that has a fan is also silent.
But that wasn't the point (or not all of it anyways).

I matters zippo if you don't have an HDMI decoding receiver. My Gigabyte 780G does 5.1 well bitstreaming 5.1 via DTS Interactive. The sound quality is 'good enough' but it's not comparable to LPCM.

To my ears, TrueHD/DTS-HD is better than multichannel lpcm via Ati video which is better than DD or DTS.
I hope to purchase an Asus HDAV Deluxe in the near future to true bitstreaming.
