Just out of curiosity why aren't you transferring to Aeroplan anymore? I ask for personal knowledge as I was planning on transferring mine to Aeroplan.

I can't speak for dots, but it's likely due to the fact that Air Canada is essentially planning on turning Aeroplan into Aeropesos in 2020.
That's exactly it. Worked too hard for the points and I'm not thrilled about the uncertainty that comes with Aeroplans future.

At 15K it should likely just get you short haul flights. Not much different from what 15K aeroplan would get you. They will work for AA flights assuming there's availability.

Avios is a distance based system meaning that flying to one city could be more expensive than the other even though they are both in the same region. As an example, it took me 105K for a one way biz class ticket on Avios from YYZ to HKG on Cathay.

It seems to me that they are better value for short haul flights. I was able to get flights for 10K to 15K within Asia.
Hi do you remember how much the tax and fees were for your cx flight on biz to hkg?

Now that the bonus points promo is here I am undecided if I should transfer directly to Avios or should I transfer to SPG and wait for the Marriot Avios promo and buy a travel package?

Tried crunching numbers but still undecided about what the best return is for my MR points converting to Avios. Was originally looking to transfer to Aeroplan but no thank you.

Advice appreciated.
Unsure about Marriott/Avios promo, but best return is to transfer directly from AMEX during bonus.

1 MR = 1.25 Avios
1 MR = 0.50 SPG

180k MR =

225k Avios
OR
120k Avios + 7 nights in a cat 5.

So ask yourself, is 7 nights in a cat 5 worth 105k Avios? You can upgrade your cat 5, but still a large variance there... Even with 1:1 you'd net an extra 60k transferring directly (no cat 5).

I've been using the same stats as you but I'm also factoring in getting the Marriot travel package when the 35% bonus is offered by Marriot so that it would net 7 nights cat 5 hotel and 120k points plus 35% bonus for a total of 162000 Avios.
225000 Avios less 162000 is a difference of 63000 Avios.
Since the cat 5 hotels average 25000 Marriot points nightly, does foregoing the extra Avios points for the hotel nights make sense?

Yes, but that requires a personal valuation. I personally can't find many cat 5s I want to spend a full week in so I don't wanna burn points for that. But there are many cat 8/9s I would be willing to upgrade to, even with the extra points. But then it has to fit within my travel plans as you generally only have 1yr + 1 extension for MRP travel pack. You can also try booking a 5 night travel pack, but YMMV.

whats this 35% Avios + Mariott bonus everyone is talking about. How do I get in on that action?

I'd like to steer as clear of Aeroplan as well as much as possible.

The elusive Marriott unicorn :) I have tried at least 50 times to find this magical creature but no luck so far

If you already have a flight in mind there's nothing to worry about, IMO.

Use the American Airlines website to check availability. Flights under MileSAAver can be booked with Avios. Call Executive Club to book if a flight shows up on AA but not BA.

Here's a sample search for YYZ-ORD for the rest of the month. Availability isn't great, but seats are there.
Just tried this and got rejected. There was LOTS of flights available on the AA site for YYZ and MCO with MileSAAver but when I called in to Executive Club to book it they told no go.

This happened to me as well. I believe avios for Canada-usa legs are not that great anymore. Very rare to find flights on aa via avios.

Anyone know if the YVR-JFK flight is good value using Avios? Trying to come up with a good idea for 280,000 Avios. ( 4 passengers ). Any ideas? Most of the info out there is about using Avios from YYZ...

Was considering Mexico... but it requires a transfer... which would be 40k YVR-DFW-CUN or 30k YVR-LAX-MZT... and considering direct flights to CUN from YVR are only about $500... ROI seems meh.
I'd love to write history... in advance.

Supposed to be a good use of Avios on Cathy Pacific's biz class. My only concern is how easy it is to redeem 4 tickets.

I guess they must have changed something, it worked for me 2 months ago.
BA.com sucks, have to check availability one day at a time...

ROI is brutal on YVR-JFK, the only saving grace is it's a direct flight unlike most Aeroplan.

25k RT in Y and 75k for J, but AC often puts YVR-EWR/LGA on sale for ~$250 RT in Y. CX charges ~$600 for Y RT, but really when you can get an AC flight for $250 to EWR/LGA it's not worth $600. If you can't book during one of the sales it's not a bad return, about 2.4 cpm.

The one time it may be worth it in J is when you need to take the red eye to JFK and want to sleep in J on CX. You likely won't get 4 seats in J, generally they only release 2 until a few weeks out.

You ever visit hawaii? You can burn 100k-130k taking the family to Maui/HNL from BLI in Y (only $11.20 USD/ea in YQ!). Generally it's easier to find a direct flight down for 12.5k ea, then back via PDX for 20k.
