America's Most Stolen Cars (2007 - 2008)

I have heard this on the radio yesterday about a new top 10 most Stolen cars ... and I can't believe one of the top 10 cars is a 2007 Toyota Corolla or a 1989 Camry 0.o and a honda civic or a honda accord as always one of the first of the top 10. Most of the cars on the list are old cars ... ppls who steals cars, shouldn't they get newer and better cars ... that's weird

The National Insurance Crime Bureau, a nonprofit funded by the auto insurance industry that focuses on auto theft prevention, has released its annual Hot Wheels list, naming the most commonly stolen vehicles in America. The list:

1. 1995 Honda Civic

2. 1991 Honda Accord

3. 1989 Toyota Camry

4. 1997 Ford F-150 Series Pickup

5. 1994 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Pickup

6. 1994 Acura Integra

7. 2004 Dodge Ram Pickup

8. 1994 Nissan Sentra

9. 1994 Saturn SL

10. 2007 Toyota Corolla

Older ones are easier to steal (no immobilizer) and given that some older cars have parts that might be discontinued or have limited availablility = more $$, it makes sense for thieves to steal older cars for their parts.

I think the 2007 Corolla base didn't have an immobilizer, I could be wrong.

I wonder if this list is based solely on the number of cars stolen, or the percentage of cars stolen based on the number of cars of that particular model on the road. Some cars are more popular than others, therefore given the fact that there is more of that car, it has a higher chance of being stolen perhaps.

What I mean: Suppose there are 10,000 97 Honda Civics on the road. From this number, 100 honda civics were stolen, Therefore 1% of honda civics on the road were stolen. Compare to Maybe Toyota Corolla. Suppose there are 8,000 2007 Toyota Corollas and of these, 95 Corollas were stolen. Therefore, 1.1875% of Corollas were stolen. So technically, the Toyota Corolla should be higher up the list.

I wonder if that is how the insurance companies determine insurance premiums based on how often cars are stolen.

Maybe I am not making any sense..

i get what you're saying and i've wondered the same thing. i remember seeing wrx STI's pretty high on last years list and thought to myself, there is very few STI's on the road to begin with

I wonder what they really do with these common cars that can be seen any where on the road. Also, what are so special about a 1994 Nissan Sentra or a 1994 Saturn SL because these 2 14 year old cars are the worst cars on the list ... and they rather steal these 2 cars over a 2007 Corolla? ... thats really odd.

Usually these cars are used in other crimes, hence they steal whatever they can find and get at easily.

It's most likely a percentage of cars stolen vs. registered of the same make and model. I mean, how many 1989 Camry's do you see?

Those cars are on the list because they are common, they are relatively easy to steal and there's a huge demand in the parts market for them, as many parts can fit in other models as well.

my exact thoughts... but doesn't seem to explain the '94 sentra and saturn.... not many of them are still on the road, don't believe there were many to begin with - thus, there shouldn't be too much demand for parts.

A lot of those stolen on the list are cars that were stolen and shipped to such places as Africa when they were first introduced to the market in the years that they came out. Now those stolen cars are breaking down and need parts!!!!!!
