First time using the card. Chip insert didn't work but tab did.

EDIT: Second time. Chip worked as well.

I received an interesting email from these guys today. I'm assuming it's due to all the CC competition going on right now.

I'll assume this is YMMV, but pretty sure most clients will get this offer.

Details: Get extra 4% cash back in addition to the standard 1.25% cash back on any spend over $500 over 3 months. The limit is an extra $50 cashback.

So, the ideal spend is $1750 over 3 months. This will give 4.01% return. While this isn't anything really special compared to my normal carrying card, it includes EVERYTHING. In other words, I can use this where my other card isn't spending gas or groceries.

I got that offer by snail mail in March, but I had to spend $900 at 1.25% before the 4% top-up kicked in, again for a maximum of $50 extra cash back. I signed up, but then never spent any more on the card. I calculated that to beat my MBNA RWE that earns 2% on everything, I'd have to shift at least $369.23/month in spending from the MBNA to the Amex, and no more than $717/month to realize the maximum net benefit of $34.88 in extra cash back for my situation. In the end I figured it wasn't worth it. Your much lower threshold of $500 in spending would make it a lot better.

Lucky you. I assume it's all dependent on how much you use the card.

I've pretty much shelved this card. Only spend about $20 per month on it. It is my best card for online shopping though. I'll hopefully take advantage of this offer if there are some decent computer component deals coming up.

I currently have the preferred the simply cash card and I see the referring bonus of $200. I am wondering if the $200 bonus is only for referring a preferred card or it also works for the non-preferred card.

Looks like there’s a new promo for the Preferred SC when you click through GCR

Image

This is not available through Amex site directly, must click through GCR.

well ... looks like amex is adding back what was taken away ...
it used to be 5% in first 6 months up to $400 with AF $79 ... then amex dropped the $400 to $300 and hiked the AF to $99 ...

so now they are giving back the incentive of an additional $100 if you spend $6000 .... which is not bad ... considering i had to spend $8000 for the $400 ... so now only $6000 spend to earn $400 ...

I used this card for 6 months and then filed it away. Not much benefit after that and what I don’t like is that they only credit your account annually every September. With the PCFWE I can cash in anytime and it comes with more benefits.
