I was very saddened by the first horrible incident on greyhound. I was surprised just now when reading the news online to see the headline was about another stabbing. Fortunately this one isn't as serious as the last, but still makes you think about how safe you are when travelling even if these incidents are rare.

"WHITE RIVER, Ont.–A young man was stabbed in the chest while travelling through northern Ontario on a Greyhound bus yesterday afternoon, less than two hours after passengers say the attacker was put on board by police.
The victim – identified by witnesses as an Asian man in his mid-20s – was rushed to hospital but was expected to survive.
Police arrested the suspect near White River, just moments after the Greyhound driver allowed the man with blood on his hands to get off at the side of the highway.
"We don't know why he was with the police or why he was able to get on the bus with a knife and get that by police," said passenger Anita Daher, one of a dozen passengers who witnessed the terrifying incident, which immediately brought back memories of the July attack near Portage la Prairie, Man., in which a passenger was stabbed and beheaded on a Greyhound.
"There's got to be some security measures put in place. We don't feel safe," said Daher.
She boarded the bus in Sault Ste. Marie, deliberately picking a seat near the front, believing she'd be safe if trouble broke out.
Daher said she was returning messages on her BlackBerry when she heard a commotion from the back of the bus just after 3 p.m.
"I heard a shout, someone yelling that someone was having trouble breathing. Then I heard something about a knife," said Daher.
She called 911, then handed the phone to the Greyhound driver.
About the same time, a young man walked up to the front of the bus, blood dripping from his hands.
The man demanded the bus stop and let him off immediately.
The driver – apparently not aware of exactly what had happened – told him they'd be arriving in White River in a few minutes.
The man wasn't satisfied, saying "Just open the doors."
"People at the back were yelling `Don't let him get away,' but the driver stopped and let him off," she said. Police apparently picked him up at the side of the road a short time later.
The bus continued on to White River where it was met by paramedics who rushed the victim to hospital by ambulance.
A Greyhound spokeswoman said yesterday she cannot confirm any details because of an ongoing police investigation. Ontario Provincial Police have not released information about the incident."[/I]

More fear mongering. While both incidents are quite tragic, they are also quite rare. People think the greyhound is scary, try riding the ttc. And do people actually wonder how they get knives on board? It's very simple, you just walk on with one. Not that I think security measures would do anything but slow down an otherwise pretty safe way to travel.

Queens Park Bureau
Pit Bull Gets Company in Ban Happy Ontario:
In an emergency meeting called this morning before Queens Park resumed it fall sitting, Premier Dalton McGuinty and cabinet made a rushed decision to add an additional dog to the “Banned Breed” list in Ontario.
“Today we have announced that due to the two recent horrible acts of violence by this breed, one in Western Canada, and now, one here in Ontario, we feel it is in the best interest of public safety to add the Greyhound to the list of dogs we don’t feel people should own.”
When questioned whether or not the Premier understood that the “Greyhound” was simply a bus, and not really a dog, the Premier blushed, shot a pointed look at his new Attorney General, and muttered something to the effect of “It must have been something to do with a handgun then, yeah that’s it, ban handguns” before storming away from the podium.
The Premier is expected to make a speech this afternoon on the new law restricting use of Bulldog brand steel wool… [/QUOTE]

These last two (governmentium and this one) are both borrowed off the net. I found them so relevant that I just had to share :)_______________

Do we need some "terrorists" to take out a Greyhound bus filled with people for the government and the stupid Greyhound to install detectors on the bus?

I would rather it be simply left the way it is...and leave "government solutions" out of the equation.
Government Solution = Oxymoron_______________

Thats the dumbest thing I've ever heard. People get stabbed on the TTC... should we put security measures in place there too? Hell, sometimes people wonder off the sidewalk and get hit by a car. We should probably put up a 6' fence along the side of all roadways. You never know!
And peckerwood... whats with the sig?_______________

I agree with you to some extent.
If that were the analogy you'd like to go with, then I assume you'd also like to say air marshals should be removed from air planes.
Do you take the Greyhound/CC/Whatever other coach company often?
One could argue that the TTC frequents stops as close as a block away from each other whereas you're stuck on board a coach bus for usually at least 40 minutes. At the very least, security before boarding would be nice. Sure, it's hard to do, but for companies that boost customer safety, this would be one ideal step to take i'd think.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked Nhiem for this post.

See, I understand where you're coming from, but a bus (train, truck, anything touching the ground) can come to a stop in a matter of seconds. In an airplace, you're pretty much stuck on the plan till it lands, and even then it's a process to get out quickly and safely. On a bus, it'll take 30 seconds to stop (and thats being generous, from 100km/h they can probably come to a dead stop faster than that) and then you can bail out the windows/doors or whatever - and suffer the injury of a fall.
But regardless, it's not a consistant situation so I don't think it needs added security. Hell, I be you that before the incident in MB most things that happened on busses didn't even make the news.
It reminds me of a few weeks after 9/11, a small passenger plane crashed into a condo (I think it was in vancouver?) and it made national news. Was it terrorism? No. Was anyone killed? I think just the driver. Was it a big deal? Not really, he had a heart attack or something, lost control, and crashed his plane. Accidents happen._______________

The man was with the police because he went in to say he needs to be detained because he was mentelly ill. Police say they can't detain him because it takes a doctor to certify his detainment for mental issues. The man asked to be sent home so the police bought him a greyhoud ticket back home (normal procedure) and the rest is history.
Police did due thier due dilligence thoughm they search the man before when he was in the station and they also searched him after. They did not search him before he boarded th ebus because there was no foreseeable reason to search him (charter of rights).LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked Narci for this post.
