Any Developmental Service Workers or Personal Service Workers Out There?

I am looking at going back to school for either, more likely Developmental Services Worker.

-What school did you go to? I am looking at Humber and George Brown, but there is a lot of other private colleges offering the PSW as well. Personal preferance, but want to stick to the "real" colleges. Am I correct thinking that the education will be better?

-I have done a lot of volunteer work, but this is the first time that I would be doing it for a living. Do you enjoy it as much as you did when you started?

-Pros and cons of these carreers?

Are you referring to DSW or SSW?

PSW is nursing...it's different than DSW and SSW. If you want to do DSW, Centennial and Humber are the only two colleges in the city that offers the program. I've heard many employers in the industry recommend Centennial over Humber.

As for SSW, GBC is the best one without a doubt. Their courses and curriculum are unique among other colleges and people from GBC SSW grads. But if you're thinking of applying for September 2009, you're too late.

My first choice is DSW but I am also considering PSW. I meant to say Centenial instead of GB for DSW. SSW is something else that I am considering as well, but I am not sure of the amount of jobs available. I have an appointment at GB tommorow and one at Humber on Thursday to discuss things with counselors. I realize that I am too late for September. I need to get my first aid and a few more volunteer hours.

PSW and DSW/SSW is a complete different field in terms of job nature. PSW is more personal care whereas DSW/SSW is more human service type of job, so you really need to think thoroughly before trying to decide.

IMO, I would do the SSW instead of the DSW unless you know for sure DSW is the field you want to work in.

SSW can do DSW types of jobs but not vice versa. I am a SSW but I could find a job in the DSW field because jobs that are looking for DSW would take an SSW too. SSW is regulated and DSW is not. When I did my SSW diploma, I did one of my placements working with individuals with developmental delayed which opened the door for the field for me (and I had jobs in that field which I could always go back), also I could work with other populations with my credential. The only thing I would prefer DSW over SSW is sign language education, but that's something that you could take on the side.
