Any good plans out there?

Hi,

I'm buying my first phone this week and I need some help deciding if I should buy it outright or buy it with a plan. If I buy it outright I'm looking for a good phone preferably under 500 and a good plan with unlimited text. If not, I would like a plan with a phone for $50 or under with unlimited text.

Fido has a $39 plan with unlimited text. You can pick up the Nexus 4 for free on 2 year contract or buy it for $425 outright. Virgin and Koodo have similar plans.

How much do you expect to call and how much data do you use? If you want nothing BUT text, then Koodo Prepaid might be best for you: $15 for unlimited text and then you buy talk or data boosters. However if you expect to be a heavy user, a plan such as Veerg mentioned will definitely be better.

Alas, none of the carriers (Big 3) offer unlimited data, but with your usage, you definitely need a plan :) 1GB for "emergencies" is quite a lot though... you'll probably be able to find a plan with 400 minutes and 1-2GB for around $50, if you look hard enough :)
