I have to watch what I post now. Considering we're on the same team. I'm almost certain I know who you are.Originally Posted by talktwo

I love how Bincent bumps his post every year... and I keep replying every year.
I guess this makes it my eighth paddling season. I'm ready to try some kayaking or canoeing.

May 9th, 2005 12:46 PM #31Well, they've got to be sometimes to keep the races going. With the sheer number of teams racing last year, they had to be harda$$es about keeping to the line. If they were lenient, then it would have taken much longer for races to start... and people would then be complaining about how long each race took to set up.

On another note.... I can't wait for the new race course that they are building to host the 2006 World Club Crew Championships here in Toronto!

Hey, just re-resurrecting this thread as we're more into the season now. I just started paddling with a team here in edmonton, and it's actually pretty fun. DO you guys have any recommendations as to getting your own life jacket, or gloves, or water shoes? Do these things actually make a difference for you?

Is it true it's bad for your back? I heard some people who broke their back doing this sport.
My sister has been doing dragon boat the last couple years and warned her about it (her team is called Banana Boat or something).

Jul 24th, 2005 09:56 PM #36I don't think someone can break their back doing this sport (maybe ... but I highly doubt it) ... it definately does take a toll on your back though.

Hope that helps_______________

Jul 25th, 2005 03:43 AM #41Any type of repetitive motion sport isn't good... running's not good for your knees, but people do it all the same.

If you're more hard core then you can get your own lifejacket. I would recommend the gloves and water shoes.
As to the sport being bad for your back, it can be but if you properly train and strengthen your core then it isn't much of a problem. Paddling isn't like a canoe stroke where you use your arms. You're using the paddle as a pulling point and the power is generated by rotating your upper body pulling yourself to your paddle.

gf is into it. Practice started in Jan. Her team joins quite a number of races locally (Centre Island, GWN, Summer Sizzler etc.). Also goes to a race in Mtl during summer. It's a lot of fun except it's almost impossible to actually win a race as the team that usually wins the race has a few Olympic rowers in it.
