Azxster got it right. They paid 30$ and had 3$ returned to them. So it cost them 27$ total.
The room cost 25$ and the attendant kept 2$.
Done.

The answer is its a matter of perspective, and there are three values you must come up with, $25, $27 and $28.
If you take the perspective of the three men, they paid $27.
If you take the perspective of the attendant, they paid $28.
If you take the perspective of the owner, they paid $25.
The most correct answer if you only had had picked one instead of all three, would have been the attendant $28, because he is the only one who is *not in the dark* about any of the transactions, hes is the most qualified to know exactly how much the men paid. A rare few people will take the side of the owner, who knows no better than the men paying $25 for the room.
This logic will be extremely handy in negotiations between multiple parties who may or may not know what is going on all of the time...

Hehe, that's a good question.
Never thought of teh owners side before, as 5$ IS the price they paid and teh question asks.
How much did they pay for the room?
