Hey,
I'm thinking of grabbing an Android phone and I'm wondering about the feasibility of using it as an in-car Navi as well as Music.
GPS using Google Maps, music using your favourite music player (headphone-out to aux-in)
Does it work well enough to effectively replace a Garmin and iPod? Also hooked up via Bluetooth to my car's system; so I can take calls handsfree? Can it be set up to mute the music while keeping Google Maps live while the call comes in?

I use mine all the time for this. I've only got a 1/8" aux jack for audio so sadly no fancy bluetooth integration for me. But I listen to music and use it as a GPS all the time.

Just remember to have a car charger on you, I've used my Android as a GPS using Sygic Mobile Maps plenty of times.

Suggestions for a cheap, non-fugly holder? Preferably vent holder? All the ones I see seem to stick out so much with giant clamping arms.

I've been using this for a couple of months now, I find that vent holders aren't as stable especially when turning or driving over potholes/bumps.

I use mine as a GPS all the time. I use Google Navigation. Its pretty sweet, better and more accurate than the other standalone gps's I've used. Just make sure you have a good data plan and a car charger. I've used mine for music a few times as well but I normally just listen to the radio.

Gps for me.. I tend to just listen to the radio for musical entertainment lol.
For some reason I find the stock map/gps that the iOS has is hard to use lool._______________

I use it all the time for GPS and music. I have automatic in car connect via Bluetooth. When I step into the car it connects and disconnects when leaving the car. When the GPS is on and I am following a route and I get a call ..the call comes in no problem and the GPS is still on in the background. There are also many apps in the Android Market if you wish further customization.

Thanks. I've looked at a bunch of Arkons before. The arms that hold the phone still seem to be a lot deeper than it needs to be for today's thin phones.
"Cheap" was too generic of a term. I mean "under $10" but I guess that is not feasible.
I'm assuming you can switch the holder to landscape?

My Lancer has a Sony MP3 CD Car Deck (CDXGT420U) that comes with a USB port ... I have a Kingston 8GB USB Drive plugged in ... so realistically it is not necessary to use my phone ... the USB already provides more than enough room ...
I've also tried plugging in my Western Digital 500GB Passport external drive ... and it works too!!!
I have an HTC Sensation XE ... but never have I used it to plug into my car ... although I can plug into the AUX on my deck ...
But I only use the GPS when I go out of town when I go fishing (especially when looking for new fishing spots) ..._______________

Is this app better than Google Navigation?
Is the GPS on Android phones satellite or cell tower (assisted) GPS? I only have a Samsung Gio and it's already pretty accurate. I might have to put it on the dash as right now, I'm only relying on audible instructions. LOL.
I guess a cheap and reliable GPS unit is still required for trips outside Canada?

I noticed Google Navigation doesn't have lane assist. Sygic does. It helps. Speed limits too, but that's not as important. Both do Text To Speech (reads out the street names).
Android phones have A-GPS meaning it uses the GPS satellites but can lock down a general location faster if it can find cell towers.
Sygic would be a full fledge GPS app just like a standalone GPS unit._______________

How much is the license since it's a 7-day trial? I can't get to www.sygic.com though.

If it works in India (were pockets can very congested), it must be a very good product. I would only imagine my older Garmin GPS recalculating on and on...
