Any VPN users here?
I just started learning about VPNs and I got some questions. What makes a VPN unique compared to just using software to remotely connecting to computers on a LAN?

The whole point of VPN is that it permits you access to your office network as if you were on site and hooked in.
Remotely connecting to PCs in office should not be even possible if your IT team has any scruples.
VPN is targeted at the corporate segment not typically at consumers.

VPN secures your connection between the 2. If implemented properly, you shouldn't have access to anything network wise but your companies network during connectivity. Everything you want to do, will need to route through your work's Internet connection.
You can do VPN + PC Anywhere for connectivity to the desktop if required. Not always recommended but if required. Some apps don't run through Citrix well or at all.
