To all the elites here - do you drive your cars daily? Have you ever left them idle for 1-2 months at a time?

My parents daily driver is a 2006 Camry with 190K on it. The last two times they went on a long vacation, something happened with the car - first time was the engine light stayed on and our mechanic couldn’t figure out why unless we wanted to pay to take the engine apart, and recently we came back and the suspension broke within the first day of driving.

Unsure if there’s any correlation or if it’s just coincidence... they do the standard oil changes and car is kept in a garage in a detached house.

Sometimes weird stuff happens when starting a car after a long time sitting.

The suspension breaking I would say is coincidence.

My 2010 Jetta TDI is now over 350,000 kms and and we're taking it on a road trip to california next week. All my family and friends have no faith that the car will make it there and back. The return trip will add another 10,000 kms on the car.

Since I last posted I've only done regular maintenance. Other than that I got a new intake manifold through the diesel emissions warranty for free from the dealership.

I still have a 2001 Saturn SL 5MT that I bought new in April 2001. It has now 302 000 km (95% highway driving)

Priced at about $14k with tax, less $3500 I had accumulated with a TD GM credit card, so I only paid $10 500 all in.

Still have the original clutch, MT and engine.

Love that car, still amazing mileage - regularly drive about 720km with a 37 / 38 liter fuel tank.

My real car is now a 2008 Subaru Outback 5MT, I imported new from Vermont. (In 2007, Cdn $ was worth more than the US, got it at USD$1.07)

Wow, that's a lot of mileage racked.

My family and family friends redeemed aeroplan miles but rental at SFO for return at LAX is so expensive.

I very much want to buy a Crown Vic, after giving my old one to my MIL (with leaky power steering and, the day after she got it, someone backed into it in a parking lot... so off to the scrap yard it went when she was done with it).

Town Car or Marquis would be fine.

I'm actually eyeing a 20+ year old Cougar... same 4.6 engine. Should go 'a while'.

Lol its ok. Let the haters hate. Theyre weiners who are too scared.

You should dig into my post history and find my legendary 2001 Lexus IS300 with 415,000km...
My first post was of me buying it @ 285,000km.

I got flamed sooooo hard. I ended up driving it to 415,000km. Meanwhile everyone else probably spent $30k on a bunch on honda civic leases while i drove a rwd drift king.

Yea I'm familar with your Lexus story. My other car is a 2006 Lexus IS250 AWD, right now it has 277,000 Km. I hope to be able to get it over 300K as well.

I’m up to 165k in my sports saloon

That’s 550k converted to Lexus/Toyota km. So I guess I’m part of the club.

It seems some of us are buying into the club.

Good thing my wife drove most of the 245k km on our 02 Civic. We got it used a year later with around 20k on the odo.

Right now it's just at 265+k and slowly inching up since I only drive it around town now, for safety concerns.

Now that the EVIP is gone, I think I will keep it until something major breaks down lol. Definitely going to be part of the club in due time, unless the OP raises the requirement to 400k.

The Panther platform is a solid platform, would go forever for sure.
I just hit 351k on my Town Car.

Although I hit a moose in the beginning of June.... Insurance repaired it surprisingly.

Presumably a vehicle is paid off by the time it hits 200,000 km. It doesn't take too many months of banking car payments to cover any maintenance costs that may come up, short of a disaster.

A new car will be an even bigger money pit. Even a simple honda civic is $400/month payment.... for 5 friggin years.

No way you’ll spend $400 per month maintaining a 200km+ car. Short of luxury cars or really bad anerican ones.

TomLafinsky wrote: Ah, but if you only buy used and pay cash, you can save an obscene amount of money. I'll give you a single example. My latest acquisition is a ES350 with 32,000 km. Believe it or not, but I got it for only 28% of the cost compared to new (I mean basic price + delivery + tax). I have purchased much more sophisticated cars than this one, but I have never, ever managed to get a deal like this one. One owner, no accident, private seller. It is the base model but I don't care. Moreover I'm giving it to my brother, so it's not like I'll be spending much time in it, LOL!!!

The thing about old cars is that those considered luxury can have very expensive parts. It's not really the labor, it is the costs of the parts. For example, an exhaust for a GS350 will set you back about $3K (labor included). That's the part that goes pretty much from the front of the car to the rear of the car, roughly speaking.
Or if you knew more details about old cars maintenence... an experience exhaust shop can do a very extensive, custom and high wuality exhaust job for $1000.

But youre on the right track. If you got a few bucks to burn. Buying slightly used isnt a bad idea at all. You grt to enjoy a newer car.

But it won’t beat running a car to the ground. If youre looking at a strictly money saving point of view.. lol

Well... Will never reach 300k because it just stopped at 299,999 ('05 Corolla). Real mileage now is around 323k. Time for a new ride though - let's hope it lasts at least as long. The old gal is going to my younger sister.

Corollas never die.
