I'm going to be moving into the same condo complex as my fiancee in a month or two.. since all of the units already have Rogers cable hooked up, and I'll be on the 7th floor, she'll be on the 3rd.. I am curious to see if this might work

Pretty useless, with 802.11g you get coverage nearly anywhere in the house, in fact I get signal from neighbours a few doors down. (Unless you have like a gigantic mansion)

It's probably cheaper and less work to just add in access points in addition to your wireless routers.

Are you thinking of having one Rogers cable account and then sharing it between the two of you on separate floors? I'd have thought that Rogers would have figured out a way to prevent someone from doing that. I mean, what's to stop one person from signing up for a Rogers' account and, then, everyone else using this product throughout the building?

Sorry why would you move into the same complex on different floors? Why not together?

I'd have thought that Rogers would have figured out a way to prevent someone from doing that. I mean, what's to stop one person from signing up for a Rogers' account and, then, everyone else using this product throughout the building?

Each unit in the building has a Rogers Cable connection, complete with a digital box. its included with the maintenance fee.. everyone shares the same cable connection as far as I know.

So, since the infrastructure is there, and there is a signal travelling through the wires, I'm curious to see if it'd travel thru. They also have a LAN-over-coax solution, but looks more pricey & its limited to 128kbit

Right now, I'm paying like $100 for Cable/Internet and she's paying about $40 for just internet. When I move to that building, I'll immediately drop $60 for cable, since it'll be included with the maint. fee, and if we are able to get this wireless thing running, she'll be able to drop her $40 internet, thus dropping our bills by about $100~

And you are right.. What is stopping anyone from doing this?
Lack of product knowledge? This product looks pretty new if engadget just discovered it on the 8th..

I'm sure there might be another way around it... e.g. Same idea, only through the powerlines..

loking into linksys wireless bridges extenders.. it can be done.. I read up on a article that your home wireless internet can be extended as far as you want as long as you have wireless acess points acessing as wireless bridges/repeaters to repeat the signal/bost.

I found this way better to share between floors (I live in a duplex, upstairs is on a seperate hydro meter and it still works!):

Ethernet over powerline, got a two pack from Costco for $90 (they stopped selling it, darn it).

Seriously, this is a pretty neat product! I remember how you could do this, linking your home network with regular phone cable and it ran at 1-2mbit.

When the LAN over Power was publicized in the papers, it took off! at 14mbit, I can see why.. thats pretty impressive as an alternative to 802.11b

I was thinking of doing this:
[modem]---{WiFi router}---|AC adapter|--(electrical lines)--|AC adapter|---{WiFi Access point}

Where the access point is in her apartment, allowing my signal to broadcast the signal to hers/brothers/parents/laptops/PCs

The OP is talking about four floors...I don't think wireless bridges/repeaters are going to be able to do that unless he is willing to install them on the outside of the building.

I have been thinking the same thing. It is pretty hard to beat the concrete barrier.

it may not work. most condos & appartments have wiring closets where all the cable lines go into. If those two appartments go to the same cable room (tap) then it mite work, but if its seperate, then there is no way it will work. Rogers Cable puts some measures into filtering their cable tap system from unauthorized interference.

The easiest thing to connect two appartment suites together is through the phone lines.. if u have access/authorization to the phone room, you can crossconnect an unused pair from one appartment suite to an unused pair on the appartment suite on a different floor, i know because I've done this b4.
