Anyone Seen a Blu-Ray Writer on sale? Why not?

So how come no one has any BRD writers on sale? Apart from that sale in September for $135 I havn't seen anything even come close.

that's a reader not a writer and it's cheaper at futureshop too, well not the same model but a cheaper one still.

Wasn't the price below $200 (about 189) before our dollar tanked? I'm not sure, just wondering if someone has a better memory than mine which shouldn't be too hard.

What was I saying?

I would almost pay $250. I paid $200 in 2005 for a Plextor so $250 not too far off and the BD-RE discs are very close in price to DVD+RW discs.

I think CC had one on sale for $249 on boxing day. I just wasn't interested in paying that much so I passed on it.

Is LG the only game in town? I don't remember seeing anyone else with one on the market.

IMO, Plextor lost its coolness back in the days when DVD Writers were first coming out. Plextor took so long to get something on the market, and at first they only supported +R. And then they took ages again to get a +/-R on the market, the PX-708A, and the thing was surrounded by a lot of bug reports and failures. I ended up returning mine to Costco because it was putting physical scuff marks onto the disc!

I was a Plextor fan back in the day ... but somehow they messed up the whole dvd writing experience ... not sure what exactly happened but they got passed on by other brands.

So whats the latest on Blu Ray back-ups? Will I be able to copy my blu-ray movies onto blu-ray discs or is that in the future? If I can, what software/hardware do I need?

You can do it now, except if you want an exact copy of the original, you often need a blank dual layer disc for up to 50GB of content, which are still expensive. Instead backup on onto your drive/RAID5 NAS.
Either way...

They got it figured out by the last two models, the 755 and 760, though. Even Dolphin was recommending the 760, and he is/was anti-Plextor.

And Plextor was one of the few that made DVD writers that actually did a decent job at reading and writing CDs.

Are not blu-ray discs under used? Last I checked 1080p movies are 15GB so there's always 10GB left over on BRD-R DL. Did it change in the last year? I really thought the extra space was for higher quality audio and higher pixel movies like 1440p and 1620p. If I'm right a 1:1 BRD movie will fit fine on BRD-R. I'm hoping they keep it simple and stick to just 2 disc types, BRD-R and BRD-RE and don't invent any BRD+ whatever. Less formats make purchasing a whole lot easier, don't have to weigh as many writer performances and don't have to worry about so many types of disc quality.

If anyone can elaborate on the process of making Blu-Ray backups of my movies (I finally got the DVD process down) I would certainly appreciate it. Often my kids get a hold of the discs and ruin them so I'd like to only put out the copies for usage and then make new ones as needed instead of forking over another $30 for a movie I already owned.

Specific instructions found in the forums at afterdawn, slysoft, and clubcdfreaks. AFAIK, Slysoft version 6502 is the only program that bypasses all current protection for your "backup" needs.

@GC, If you want an exact copy with ALL the extras, you need a BD DL.
eg; Simpsons, Casino Royale on 50GB BDs. However, you are right, the MAIN movie is often under 25GB or you could set the bitrate lower to make it fit.

Note a formatted single layer BD is about 22.5 GB of usable space, not 25GB.
