You didn't mention the reason why it went off. If it's a false alarm, you should get your super to look at it. Disconnecting it could be very unsafe.

In-apartment fire alarm goes off every week. Can't turn off or will get fined!!
I have some sort of box in my apartment that has a speaker. It's a fire alarm and goes off almost every week. It's extremely loud(I'd say 125db+). If you stay 5 meters from it,it hurts your ears badly. So,it goes off even at night and continues usually for 10-30 minutes. The same alarm goes off in the corridors,so I don't know why they put one in my apartment
. To make the story short,I once tried to disconnect it as I couldn't sleep(went off at 2 am!)Now they sent me a letter saying that they may press charges and fine me up to $5000 for doing so. This is insane. I am damaging my ears due to the fu##n noise and I am getting fined?
Anyone has any advice on what to do?

I used to live in one of the *****hole buildings like that in DT Toronto.
The mothafka went off each and every nite because of some stupid reason. I was very mad one nite and I pulled the cover off and cut some wires.
Within a couple days building management found it out (these are attached to central fire alarm system I guess) and dropped a bill in front of me for the amount of $250 to fix the damn thing.

try and fix it before you cut it. if theres no fix, atleast, not a quick one, keep bitching and muffle it as best you can. just dont let them see.
and buy a couple regular smoke alarms for your own appt just to be safe while it's muffled._______________

I am really concerned about my ears. 125db can damage your hearing quite fast

A student resident downtown across UT called Tartu used to do that every week. Every friday or saturday, the alarm would ring. It's such a pain in the ass! It's because people randomly pull it. Stupid idiots. It's happened a few times at my residence in waterloo too.

I know how it feel, except I didn't get fined when I unplugged my alarm. My alarm is right beside the kitchen and thus, would go off whenever I boil soup or cook rice, with the fan on. And I live in a bachelor suite.
Perhaps you can buy some sound insulating rubber and tape it around the fire alarm.
