Aren't they worried that their bodyguards will turn into their jailers one day? What's keeping those strongmen from keeping the kids under 24/7 'protection' so your elderly grandfather is forced to do what they say?

Outsiders will be used to seeing them with the family all the time, and they really only need to threaten the person or people in charge. The rest of the family would keep living normally in ignorance while their 'bodyguards' hold swords over their heads that only the head of the family knows about.
From what I have heard and saw, these bodyguards work very closely with the family that they are protecting. They are basically living the life that you are living every day and you need to make an effort to make sure that the person you are hiring is genuinely a good person. There are good people out there who wants to make a honest living and for a handsome salary and some reference and background checks, it is not hard to find a qualified person who will look out for you. My father referred to his dad's bodyguard/driver as "uncle", and the family treated him more of an extended family member than an employee.

well, the Sherman family pretty much hired the best private investigator available.

https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2017/1 ... eaths.html
Unfortunately he won't have access to the crime scene until after the police finish their job so it's not like he can gather dna and other evidence and observe how the place was found. He'll really just be relegated to interviewing people and trying to piece things together. I doubt he will be able to do much with this particular crime but I guess it's worth trying given the family has the coin to hire him.

Looks like Mayor John Tory got involved:

Toronto Mayor John Tory has acted as a conduit for the family of Barry and Honey Sherman, telling police that relatives are upset with how the service has communicated information about the billionaire couple's deaths.

A spokesman for the mayor confirmed that Mr. Tory has spoken several times to the Shermans' relatives, both by phone and at last week's memorial service, where the mayor delivered remarks. Don Peat said in an e-mail that it was normal for Mr. Tory to reach out to the families of people who suffer violence in the city.

The article also mentions that Ontario Health Minister Eric Hoskins tweeted condolences that identified the couple yet that information had not even been made public by the police. 'On Wednesday, a spokeswoman for the minister would not explain how he got that information'.

I think the only reason he’s getting involved cause Sherman’s have more money than the city of Toronto lol does and if they screw up the investigation they could get screwed for be incompetent and that’s what Toronto police are. I wonder if mayor Tory would get involved if the family didn’t have money lol NAH.

The best? He has been retired for close to 20 years. Guy probably doesn't know what DNA evidence is. They should have hired Thomas Magnum.
Actually, he's only one of a number of private investigators that have been hired by the Sherman children. This is what you can do when you have money:

Globe & Mail: Greenspan told CBC Toronto Klatt is one of a number of "distinguished homicide investigators" he's retained to "provide a second lens" on the case.

And this is also what you can do when you have money:

Details about the house that Honey & Barry Sherman were going to build. I take it one can just go to the City of Toronto building department and review the subject of a building permit, ie the house plans?

25,000 sq foot building lot, 19,000 sq ft home, 2 stories with basement, master + 3 bedrooms, room just for luggage, elevator, gym, servants quarters, 3 car garage with car lift & separate building with indoor pool:

Toronto Star: The house Honey and Barry Sherman would have built

I agree. Now there is controversy about his involvement. I think he did get more involved than he would have it had not been the Shermans and he may have crossed the line. I doubt it was as routine as City Hall is saying and that if you were murdered at Jane/Finch that Tory would be taking your call and talking to the police about your issue:

Under the Police Services Act, no board member is allowed to give orders or directions to any member of the police force, or direct the chief on day to day operations of the force.

What Tory did for the Sherman family “creates the impression that a prominent family has special access to policing services,” said Mukherjee, who retired from the Police Services Board in 2015, and became a visiting professor at Ryerson University’s department of criminology and office of equity, diversity and inclusion.

“Whether this is true or not does not matter. Not every family or person has the ability to get the city’s mayor to be their spokesperson on a police investigation.”

Toronto Star: Did John Tory cross a line by talking to police about the Sherman investigation?

Thats a good quote
“They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft where we are hard, and cynical where we are trusting.”
I can definately see this happen... they think nothing but greatness of their billionaire hot shot dad.
But theoretically... if he really did murder/suicidethat would turn taint him forever.
Like that nice neighbour who gets busted for child porn!

Its very rare for people to get away with murder.
When they do its bc its gang related, cops know who did it but no 1 talks.

Or an elaborate cover up.

I do think the family is over-reacting at this point, when the investigators have not even completed their work and made any conclusions, especially since the firms the family have hired cannot even gain access to the crime scene. I still doubt it is murder-suicide, though. This recent report in the Toronto Sun, provides another tidbit of information that I hadn't heard before. The bodies were in hanging in sitting position with their legs straight out, not kneeling which I had assumed before as no details were given. I don't know how one puts themselves in that position, which Barry Sherman would have had to do if he killed his wife first and then committed suicide. As reported previously they had their winter coats pulled down over their arms behind their back. How do you strangle yourself with a leather belt in that position?

At first I thought maybe the victims butts were sitting at the bottom of the waist high pool and their legs straight out, but its unknown if there was water in there or not.

imo, more likely there was at least least two people, one to hold the person in position while the other tied a belt around the neck and railing.

That would have been impossible give they were hanging by their necks with leather belts from the railing which was waist height above the pool deck.
