They're more confident in their ability to turn their phones in to bricks now.

Get ready to see a bunch of stolen bricked iPhones on Kijiji.

And a bunch of posts on RFD asking how you can re-activate a stolen bricked iPhone from Kijiji.

I'm pretty sure they have a separate demo partition on these display phones.

But even if they didn't have an activation lock, something as simple as injecting hot glue into the SIM slot would be a good deterrent.

As said above, demo partition that cannot be restored, can only be sold for parts. Eyes are always on, if scum want to get chased down by security, getting a criminal record or jail time for multiple offender, that's their pathetic life.

Lots of merchandise there not secured, shoplifters get caught for anything, iPhones no different.

Shops pay closer to $50 for a replacement 6 Plus display and about double that for 7 Plus.

You must don't know anybody that works as loss prevention in retail.

Technically you can't do anything to the suspect even if you caught them 'stealing'. It is also illegal to detain anybody in a store. Once they walked out of the store the only thing you can do is post their picture caught on camera. This is where professional theft ring comes in.

Apple could place the stolen phone into Lost Mode remotely using Find My iPhone.

"Lost Mode locks your screen with a six-digit or four-digit passcode and lets you display a custom message with your phone number to help you get it back. You can also remotely erase your device if needed, and your custom message will continue to display even after the device is erased."

Actually I do, my friend detained a mother in Fortinos for shoplifting makeup until the police came and she was charged. A bit embarrassing as she had kids with her iirc. Whether this was legal or not, she was busted.

Any phone taken out of the store will set off an alarm. If not returned, the phones will also be rendered unusable.

Is there some verified way to bypass the lock? Because you can only turn an iPhone into an iPod (blacklisted IMEI) if FindMyiPhone is off. And there is currently no public root access jb for iP7/+ to assist the bypass.

The mother should've ran for it. She's clearly not a professional thief here.

Highend phones like iphones is a juicy payoff for professionals.
