View Full Version : Which twin stroller to get?

With the upcoming birth of our son #2, we'll need to buy a twin stroller as our DS1 will be only 1 years old when his brother arrives. My plan is to buy a stroller that will be perfect not only while DS2 is little but for us to travel with as well. We have a Eddie Bauer travel system and have probably used it a handful times with DS1. It's too bulky and weighs too much. We recently bought a Rockstar Turbo umbrella for DS1 and used it while traveling to the Bahamas and really liked it. It's easy to use and lightweight....funny thing is we have used that stroller more than our travel system which we got right before DS1's birth (he's 9 months now). So we need something close to that, so hubby actually uses the stroller. There are SOOO many strollers out there, that even after reading reviews, watching youtube videos I still don't know which one to get. The price we'd like to stay around is $600 and plan on buying it from the states. Here are a few I have been looking at:

How old exactly will be DS 1 be when DS 2 arrives? Also how is his temperment?
We have 2 years between our two kids and we opted for the Sit and Stand Joovy Caboose.
The reason I ask about his age and temperment is because if he's closer to 2 when DS 2 arrives - then there's a good chance he will not enjoy being in a stroller.
Does he enjoy strollers a lot now? What is his temperment?
with our oldest he hated strollers from the time he could crawl - he was always on the GO GO GO. Our second is a lot more calm - but as soon as he could walk - he doesn't enjoy the stroller life either! We can get him to sit in it for a short period of time - so more often than not ... we don't use a stroller anymore.
We have a lot of friends who went out and purchased big double strollers - Valco, Phil & Teds... only to have the older ones refuse the strollers.
Although our oldest hated strollers - the sit & stand gave him the option to sit or stand... he didn't feel like a baby!

DS1 will be 12 months when DS2 arrives. He really enjoys sitting on the stroller...loves having our daugther drive him around. I came across this stroller which seems to be lightweight...and folds quite compact:

I did, but with having to buy the 2nd seat seperately the cost adds up. Also Im not too fond of the way it looks, seems to work fine if one is a newborn/infant and the other a toddler, but doesn't look too comfy for 2 toddlers (since DS2 will be a year old next year). I would rather have a side by side.

i got mine with the extra seat for 6 bills with a little wheeling and dealing i am on the other side where i feel side by side is not appealing to me and I find it already tough to maneuver in and out of lanes in stores ...i can only think it will be even harder with the side by side option

We used to have the Baby Planet, didn't find it easy to maneouvre. Offers no advantage over others. The Maclaren Twin Techno is the go-to umbrella stroller for most of our twin family friends. We have that and the Valco double - we like them both, but they serve totally different purposes. City Mini Double looks good to, I don't think it was around when we were looking. There's another twin side by side that people have positive comments about, I just can't remember the name. They have a warehouse in Mississauga, but can only be purchased online. If I recall the name, I'll post it. From what I remember, the stroller looked good, had big wheels, drove well and was well priced.

Thanks for the inputs....I think I have narrowed it down to the Maclaren (looks easier to move around with) and Baby Jogger City mini (Im really liking the way it folds and is compact). I understand the Maclaren is a real umbrella stroller, so might not to be good for occasional use in the winter time? While the City mini seems like it's a bit of both...since both weight about 26/27 pounds....I guess it's wiser to go with the city mini? I see the 2011 model for around $380 US...so the price differences between these 2 aren’t that far. If you had to get one from these 2 and had 1 newborn and 1 twelve month old...would not need to use the stroller on a regular base(Occasional trips to the doctors, mall and sometimes pick up DD from school in the winter). Which one would you choose? And no please don't say neither unless you can recommend a stroller that has what I am looking for. :o
Here is a pic of the City mini:

I was looking at the Valco as well, but a bit more pricey than our budget. Did you use the Maclaren just for travelling? Do the seats truly lay flat for infants/newborns?

My wife and I have the Bob revolution single stroller and we love it. The duo stroller is clearanced right now due to the new model coming out.

Great suspension, smooth ride and big wheels make it a good indoors and outdoors stroller.

+1 for the city mini double. It's the best of everything for us. Super easy fold, compact and light (relative), fits through door's, but still has decent comfort for the kids and good for outdoor walks....

Thanks...I looked at it but the weight of the stroller scares me as DH would hardly use it then...its almost 34 pounds.

Sorry I can't give you much advice on double strollers as I've never owned one, although I do have a MacLaren single umbrella stroller and I find it light and very durable.
Just wanted to offer you info about a great website for strollers. It's based in the US, but they offer free shipping to Canada. Their prices are very good. I ordered my UPPA baby from them and other friends have ordered strollers which came quickly and with no hassle. They have great customer service, and when I ordered mine I googled a 10% off promo code which gave an additional discount.

+1 for the Bob ... we've been using the single for 2 years now and love its versatility! Yes, it is a bit heavy to lift, but thanks to its large wheels, maneuverability is incredible!
Another suggestion is Phil & Teds. Friends of ours purchased it about 4 yrs ago, and have gone through 3 kids with it and they have nothing but good things to say.

+1 for the City double mini
We have one and been using it for almost 1.5 years now. We love it so much that we will be lending it to our friend who will be having baby #2 soon. It's compact enough to fit thru doors and aisle ways in stores. It's so easy to manuevre...I can easily push it and turn it with just one hand.
We managed to find the baby carseat attachment on craigslist for cheap. That is another option if you plan on using the car seat with this double stroller.

Would you know the approx demensions when it's folded? Lenght/width? From the video it seems quite compact. Thanks

+1 on the phil and teds. Front to back or top/bottom is better IMHO, the side by side strollers are really hard to manouever.
With the P&T you can remove the second seat quickly when one of the kids isn't around and use it like a normal stroller. I'm pleased with ours, the recent finger crush recall was no surprise you can do this with any stroller.
Also +1 on the quality of the MaClaren - after buying a few beat up $5 Maclarens from s/h shops whilst travelling in Australia I was impressed how well these guys had stood the test of time and bought one new here. We have a single maclaren for airplane trips - love it.

OP, I know the Phil & Ted's hasn't made your short list, but I just wanted to give another +1! Love it! We've had three kids go through it, and still often pile all three onto it!
I didn't have a side-by-side, but my friend (whose kids are 16 months apart) got the Bob side-by-side and barely used it. Found it too wide and cumbersome.

I would suggest if you live close to dear baby born store near yonge and steeles there's a lot of double stroller and try them out. Been there this afternoon and bought zooper tango duo 50/50 and love it with all the free accessories and after test fitting the demo to my car it didn't fit, so I change it to peg perrego twin aria 60/40 which is a little smaller and lighter

Has anyone looked at the Britax B-Ready Stroller? Looks like it has alot of configurations but I'm a bit concerned about having the second child low to the ground as it's shown. On the plus side, it's very compact and not as long or wide as the other double strollers out there.

I know this brand has a good reputation but the stroller when using as double just doesn't make much sense...I mean the bottom seat idea just looks horrible. If you look at the video you'll see what I mean.

I looked at it today and I've been going back and forth debating if I like it or not.
I did notice that on their site they have a promotion starting in March that gives you the second seat free which is a bonus and cost saver. http://www.britax.ca/promotions

We had the Baby Jogger City Mini double and absolutely loved it! We were actually sad when our kids got too big for it and we had to sell. The folding feature was the best. So easy. It was a dream to push with our two kids who were two years apart. I could easily push it with one hand. We tried other (side-by-side) doubles and some of them were a nightmare to push. It fit through all doorways and most aisles. We also purchased the belly bar. It was great to hang toys/sippy cups off of. They kids liked hold on to it or put their feets up on it. The sun canopy was so big that it could cover the child completely. It also has a really high resale value. We sold ours for 3/4 of what we paid for it after two years of use. I would highly recommend getting this stroller. You won't regret it.

my younger kids are 18 month apart, we got the Peg Perego Aria 60/40 and we love it. I needed something light, easy to fold up and open, won't cost a fortune. And this stroller meets all my requirements. My kids are 3.5 and 2 now and we still use the stroller a lot. great buy!!

check out baby jogger city select. it accommodates up to two 45lb seats, front and back. Since the new 2011 model came out, the older one is selling like hot cakes for such a reasonable price!

We just got the Mountain Buggy Urban Double, the last of the New Zealand era (the Duos are made in China).
Very strudy and very highly reviewed. They have the last one, we are aware of, in Toronto at Ella and Elliot going for $540 in black. It was originally between $750-800.
We almost bought that one, but found it even cheaper in Red.

I got the City Select, they gave it to me for $400 instead of the $430 listed on the website.
The mini is also on sale: http://www.dearbornbaby.com/product.php?productid=3669&cat=274&page=1

Just an update, went by to DearBorn Baby and really liked the way the City Mini Double handled and folded. Just purchased it from the states for $399 the 2011 model in Stone. The price here is $499 so a nice saving for a great stroller.

I bought the Maclaren Twin when the grandkids were 1 & 2 years old. I hated the stroller they had, don't remember what brand it was but it had a front jumper seat that looked so uncomfortable, it was massive and hard to manoeuvre around.
Loved it for travelling. Fit is the trunk of the car, on the train. Light to carry or push, easy to manoeuvre around. Fits through doors no problem. Only problem you would have is it cannot accept a newborn carrier. Both kids need to be able to sit u on their own.

So just picked up the stroller this week....and SO glad we picked this stroller. It's amazing to move around and so light and easy to fold! Hubby is more impressed than I am, which means he'll actually use this stroller unlike our eddie bauer which is collecting dust.
