Satay Ria at Market Village is a MUST! There Roti is made right in front of you, their curries are excellent and they make some of the best Pad Thai!

If you like Roti, definitely try their Cheese Roti as well!

Yep, one vote for Satay Ria @ Market village. You'll need to drive into the center of the parking lot and its between Market village and Pacific Mall.

There's also Salad King @ Yonge and Dundas. Its opposite Sam the record man on the road which goes to Ryerson. My recommendation is the Seafood Fried Rice with Beef/Chicken Satay as appetizer. My only gripe is that because of the layout of the restaurant (or cafeteria if you will ha!), you might be sitting very close to some stranger. Go there and you'll know what I mean. But y'know what, the food makes it all worth it and hey, you might be sitting next to a hottie who you can chat up. :D

Matahari Grill on Baldwin St (downtown, East of Chinatown, one street North of Dundas) is fantastic, and very authentic. It can be a little pricey but well worth it. The best dishes are the Beef Rendang, Mee Goreng and Hor Fun (no longer on the menu, but it used to be; can still be ordered).

its across from the Bubble tea shop and the pirated CD/DVD store (as well as stairs going upstairs. If you are walking from the food court, go to the underpass where the Hot Pot and Viet places are and keep going towards the Chinese dessert place.

Satay Ria is a restaurant on its own but the entrance is from inside the mall. Right at the end of the hallway where the popular dessert shop is.

Satay Ria at Market Village has closed! It is completely empty inside. All the tables, booths and counters are gone.

It is possible that they are renovating (the restaurant was too big) but most likely they have closed (the big stand showing pics of their dishes is gone).

Never tried the bbq place, but the other place has good fried noodles. They have the flat rice noodles with beef (gwon chow ngow ho) on special for $2.99 sometimes. Best deal in town for this, or so I've been told.

Restoran Malaysia
815 Major Mackenzie Dr. E. (Bayview)
Richmond Hill
905-508-1432

Tucked between fast food joints and a karaoke bar in a Richmond Hill strip mall, this no-frills eatery is easy to miss. A busy bartender shakes up Malaysian milk tea, mango shakes and iced coffees. Amid standard Asian appetizers (spring rolls, fish cakes, satays) is Penang rojak ($4.95), a winning salad of fresh pineapple, green mango, jicama, bean sprouts and deep-fried tofu tossed in a sweet, salty and spicy brown sauce. Plain steamed noodles, rice, freshly deep-fried shrimp chips and pappadum are all excellent sides, but the roti win the prize. These airy, slightly sweet flatbreads are as thin as silk stockings and oil-free perfect when plunged into the saffron-coconut creaminess of Penang gulai shrimp curry ($12.95), with its juicy jumbo shrimp, chunks of tomato and eggplant, whole okra, onion and fresh coriander. Servers are knowledgeable and helpful. Closed Monday.

Matahari (Malaysian) Bar & Grill:
39 Baldwin St. (north of Dundas, west of University)
416-596-2832
http://www.mataharigrill.com/home.html

The menu melts with tropical injections. First courses ($5–$9) awaken the palate with surprising flavours—exemplary sweet-tart tamarind-prawn soup or peanut-topped crunchy achar-achar, a Malay coleslaw with pickled cucumber and carrots, cabbage, green beans and pineapple. Dependable mains ($11–$19)—such as mango chicken, vegetable curry and nasi goreng (Malaysian fried rice)—prove popular, but less familiar jewels are worth seeking out, especially rendang braised beef short ribs (yielding, redolent morsels) and mee goreng (surely pad Thai’s sophisticated cousin). Savoury coconut rice accompanies curries especially well. Electric green pandan crêpes rolled around fresh coconut and palm sugar must be the most exotic and subtly perfumed dessert option. Bananas (pan-fried with rum and Kahlúa) and tapioca also provide tropical conclusions. One of Baldwin’s better wine lists, with bargains for patient readers. Imported and domestic beers also entice. Smooth service. Closed Monday.

Sounds like roti/chapati from Malaysia. You can find similar ones from T&T and larger Chinese supermarkets. They're uncooked but come frozen in packs of 5 for less than $2. They come in various flavours. Just fry them up on unoiled frypan. Yummy.

 That's paratha!
If it tastes like curry, it must be curry. Yes, Malaysian style curry has coconut milk added. Also the curry powder they use has less spices than Indian curry and more yellowy in colour.

Are you serious Satay Ria at Market Village closed? I used to love that place. What happened to it?

Satay Ria is gone now, went out of business. Their food wasn't as close to what Malaysians eat back in Malaysia as Restoran Malaysia and Coconut Island's is. I had some Malaysian friends say those two are more authentic and reminds them more of what they ate back home. Restoran Malaysia though has a bit more variety and dishes are slightly bigger. But Coconut Island has the Malaysian ice desert!

so when did Satay Ria close? I went to Market Village and noticed they're no longer there. As far as Malay/Thai food is concerned I like that place the best, most of the dishes are good and size is fairly large compared to Restoran Malaysia for example a dish of curry beef brisket with roti is almost twice the size of the one at Restoran Malaysia. But I do like Restoran Malaysia very much and it is close to where I live, but they're more expensive probably because they serve Halal stuff which is a bit more costly than regular meat. And Coconut Island is terrible when I went when they first opened they improved?

I have to chime in here for my favorite restaurant in the world. period. Sure there are fancier, classier, etc places, but if you measure favorite by how often you go and how much you look forward to the food or recommend it to others, this is it.

I've been going here for literally years. I eat there probably once every 2-3 weeks at least (take out or eat in). I've never had a disappointing meal, and the owner/chef and his wife are on a first name basis with me. Wonderful people, really make an effort to know their regulars.

If you like your food HOT, they're great. They understand that what's hot to me (token white guy) isn't necessarily what someone from Malaysia (like one of my co-workers was) would find hot. They can prepare most of their dishes to suit your taste and cultural background! The only thing that's not really adjustable is their rendang. It nearly kills me it's so hot, but I love the taste so much I just order it anyways and pay for it for the next 24h or so.

If you live in Ottawa (or come for a visit) you MUST go.

The owner is the same as Satay Ria in Market Village many years ago who took all the money away and declared bankrupt the next day without paying the wages to all his employees because no money? After few years, he started Restoran Malaysia at Bayview and Major Mac? Whoever is working there better becarefuly cause you might not get the paid ONE day...

no...I never worked there before but my friend.

u want to try msian food and not expensive...go to gourmet garden or there's one in first markham place foodcourt

I'm sorry to hear that you do not like this resturant, but to whoever that has not tried it, give it a shot you might enjoy the food.

Just off Whites Road in Pickering is a little joint called Red House Thai. I love it, it's tiny but the food is great.

I like the spicy beef, and the cashew chicken. I haven't even gotten around to trying the pad thai yet!

They have lunch specials for about $7.50 which includes a main, spring rolls, shrimp chips and a drink.

Here are some reviews.

Link (http://www.restaurantica.com/restaurants/12948/)

For those of you with the coupon book, it's in there. The coupons can't be used for the lunch specials.

WoW Malaysia is amazing.

I was just there today for father's day meal and it was great!!

Food was great...customer service was great... restaurant is clean.. portions were big.

I give it 9/10! they lost 1 point cuz they don't serve alcohol which sucked.. I always like an ice cold beer with my curry.

But food was amazing...will be a frequent customer.

In Msia, you pay as little as CAD$2 and the food or dishes are much much better than the one you order from Restoran Malaysia...

I've heard that as well.

Ok, this requires me to think back 15 years... uhmm as far as I can remember there are 2 kinds.. one with chicken and 1 with some kinda fish. The chicken one is filled with curry potatoes, a slice of boiled egg and curry chicken wrapped in a fried flaky bread skin, like a puff..hahaa..

It's not the same here. I haven't found anything even remotely similar to the ones back home.

Why?

Every time I go to one of those Malaysian/Singaporean restaurants and ask if they have curry puffs they give me this weird look. Not very authentic if you don't even know what curry puffs are!!

Restoran Malaysia has it, their current menu does not have it listed, you will need to ask the servers for it.

I guess in terms of bakery, most people sells stuff that are more similar to HK style bakery instead of other countries. I remember the fresh baked curry puffs back home. yum!

Should try Gourmet Garden out in Scarborough. Most of their food is better than Restora Malaysia. The only problem with that place that it looks kinda crummy.

Malaysian Spare Rib tea???? You mean Bak Kut Teh?

In terms of the "chicken rice" you mean the Hainanese chicken rice or just plain of chicken rice?

That's it..Bak Kut Teh or whatever they call it in Singapore.

I don't think they call them Hainanese chicken rice in Singapore, simply chicken rice if memory serves me right.

Tiger beer with chili crab simply another sensation.

If it's "singapore chicken rice" they wont call it "singapore chicken rice" or "hainanese chicken rice" (or "Hoi Lam" chicken rice) in Singapore. I'm pretty sure it's the same thing we're talking about.

BTW, Gourmet garden have both. They arent the best as you can get back home, but they're decent.

I really miss the chili crab or at least the sauce. Nobody cooks crabs like that here

Coconut Island Restaurant
905-943-9628
8362 Kennedy Road (near Highway 7)
Markham, ON

Coconut Island Restaurant is not the greatest looking restaurant but the food is very tasty.

It's located at the big Chinese / Asian plaza at Kennedy and Highway 7, next door to a dim sum restaurant (Grand Lake Chinese Cuisine).

I haven't been there for a while, but I really enjoy Coconut Island too.

I'm not sure what authentic Malaysian food is, but everything was always tasty.

The staff are very courteous and friendly as well.

Prices are very affordable too!

Bump.

Is there any better place than Restoran Malaysia right now?

In terms of food, portion and ambience.

I'm taking my out of town relatives to Restoran Malaysia, but thought i'd check in and see if there is anything better. I love this place, but it's pretty far out from where i am.

Matahari Grill looks nice, but from the pictures it looks like tiny expensive portions.

The other places like Coconut Island doesn't seem to be a decent sit down place, and more for takeout.

I'm considering this place. http://www.satayontheroad.com/menus.html

Also does anyone know if i can find these in the GTA?
