I just ditched Astraweb 2 minutes ago and went with this. Simultaneous multiple IPs apparently work, unlike Astraweb.

Great deal! Now I wish I hadn't gone with the $96/year Astraweb deal. The 30GB storage could definitely come in handy...
Is the price guaranteed or could they just bump up the price the next month?

What are the retentions like with these guys? I remember trying them for a month with a black friday deal but half of my downloads wouldn't work from nzbclub and *********. I could only get fairly recent things such as tv shows, anyone else having any luck with newsdemon and those free usenet search engines?

If you want to download multiple things at once, from different groups mainly, although you must be on a host that has an *excellent* connection to your ISP, every usenet provider i've tried has taken at least 4 connections to max out my slower than yours connection

I get free usenet with xennews.com 2 day trials. Maxes out my connection, 450+ day retention, and did I mention its free? When it expires I just make a new account.
At the start it was IP restricted (expires after 5 days on the same IP or something), so I just released and got a new one (dynamic on dsl). Now it doesn't seem to be so even cable internet should be able to do it.

a newbie question, what is this for?
is it like private tracker as torrent?
Not really. It's an alternative to torrents. Instead of a torrent client, you use a newsreader/usenet client. You can download content similar to torrents but the kicker is that it's all at the full speed of your internet connection - no throttling. So, say downloading an 8Gb film clip on torrent takes 2 days - usenet can take 2 hours.
I saw a link to a really good intro to usenet a while back on these forums. I'm sure someone can post it.

did you even read the op? 910 days.
I think what he might have meant was completion.
I'm tempted to jump on this myself but I've been really happy with Astraweb for the past few years. Their completion is excellent and have rarely had issues with incomplete downloads. 900+ days retention is pointless if completion is lousy.

He asked a fair question. These sites typically use text-only groups to make their retention claims. Let's be realistic - nobody here cares about those groups.
But thanks for your contribution

I posted this deal a couple of months ago. No problems downloading stuff, just had to contact them to activate the 30GB online storage. I'm gonna switch to lightningspeed or whatever it's called because it is only $3 something a month, less retention days but I got all the old stuff I want.

I did read it, I'm asking what people are actually experiencing... When I used their services every download that wasn't a movie or a tv show (recent) would simply not download, giving me errors. Using my astraweb account with the exact same .nzb file I'd be able to complete the download. I'm using sabnzbd+ Anyone else experience this problem??

Ah thank you, it must have been completion issues because I wasn't having any problems with astraweb trying to download the same content. I'm still using their pay as you go option, we'll see if I want to give this another shot. Anyone find the completion with xbox 360 games decent? It's been months since I've used newsdemon, I'm hoping they've improved.

And instead of Newsleecher, go with SABNzbd. Once you get over the interface change and setup, you'll never go back to another newsreader! Setting up downloads while I'm on the can from my phone so that they're ready when I walk downstairs? Priceless.

Even is newsdemon isn't all it's cracked up to be, you could go with Astraweb and still get $11/month or $96/year. I have no problems maxing out my 15mb Teksavvy cable connection.
For cryin' out loud you could have both an Astraweb and Newsdemon account and still be cheaper than $24.

Very good Service - quite impressed.
For < $3.50cad / month =
- unlimited downloads
- 8 connections (3 maxes out my bandwidth)
- 431 days retention
- free ssl support (if desired)
- various plans/pricing available
- as a noob, setup was straight forward
Hopefully Telus doesn't start charging me overage fees anytime soon :)
Signed up for the 3 mos package and they threw in an extra 10 days for free - so far so good.

I don't know. Sounds good on the surface but some of their terms and conditions are kind of scary:
For example:
4.5 Notice of termination of the agreement entered into by the contract parties must take place in writing by registered letter. A period of notice of 2 calendar months before the end of the period referred to in paragraph 4 applies to each agreement. Termination can only take place as of the first day of the calendar month following the expiry date.
meanwhile, on their front page it says you don't need any notice. Something just doesn't seem right about this.
Full terms are here:

Signed up For NewsDemon and set up a few downloads to try.
I fired up good old GrabIt. (so I could watch the transfer for a while in real-time) Set up a few random transfers using both large and small files using 25 connections. Transfer was trouble-free.
Set up a bunch of stuff through nzbmatrix using sabnzbd. Also found a couple of things in the 500 day range and everything downloaded without issue.
I know that's not a comprehensive test but it seems like this is the real deal. Since my monthly astraweb subscription bills on the 10th, I'm going to cancel and stick with NewsDemon for a while.
Worst case, I can always come back to astraweb if NewsDemon turns out to be a dud. (You can still get in for $11/month or $96/year)
Thanks, OP.

But i can't say for certain if Sabnzb has a search engine incorporated in it's GUI. I can see that Newsrover does.

Sickbeard (http://www.ainer.org/sick-beard-install-setup-and-configuration-guide-for-ubuntu-10-04-lts-lucid-lynx#more-747)
that looks awesome but is it linux only?
i personally use sabnzbd+ hooked up to rss feeds from nzbmatrix...just put in the show you want in the rss section of sabnzbd and its automatic from there on...

$21.99 for unlimited? That's slightly cheaper than my pricey plan with Giganews.
Huh? I'm paying $5/month unlimited from a deal they offered over Christmas/Boxing Day.
Giganews is awesome, but not worth the price. Plenty of 2nd tier providers around that will meet the needs of Canadian pirates.

No, you can get both for Windows as well, not sure about OSX. To round it all out, you can also add in Couch Potato for movies.

[QUOTE=WiseWolf;12536097]Thundernews has given me 10+ incomplete files during the 2 months been using it. These are nzb's that have no reported problems from other users. Rather annoying on a 10gig or larger nzb to find out there's some incomplete pieces ruining the extraction process. I thought it was the program maybe, but I've tried NewsRover, UnzBin, and now using NewsLeecher. Read online that incomplete downloads is mostly caused by a not so great server, so will be switching to Newsdemon to try them out.

Check out sickbeard/sabnzbd combo... Sick setup, downloads all my shows in HD or SD (whatever I choose) the moment its avail for download. Renames/sorts in appropriate show/season folders and creates metadata for XBMC.
It's a pain getting it working on a mac... and you need to have Terminal open and type in a command for Sickbeard to start. I'll try it out for a couple of weeks and see how well it works out. Thanks for the suggestion btw.

Giving Usenet a try after being a BT user for the past several years. It sounds great in theory, but I'm finding that many files are password protected, and the only way to get the so-called 'password' is to hit up a phishing/spam site (and many users have reported this to be a complete fraud).

Once you go newsgroup, you don't ever have to bother trying torrents. For a few dollars a month, you can max out ur line and get the tv shows you want. Heck with the sickneard setup, you won't ever have to pay for Rogers tv again. Just put up a ota antenna for the news and ur prettyuch golden.

I've been using Newsdemon for about 3 weeks now, and so far I seem to be getting a lot of incomplete downloads. Many of the shows I'm having trouble with are older, so maybe I'm just going beyond their completion. I'm going to try going back to Astra for a bit to see if I have any better luck.
I use SABnzbd+ for downloading, but thought I was try another client to ensure it wasn't SABnzbd+ causing the problem. When I try downloading an NZB in GrabIt, which failed in SABnzbd+, I get a lot of errors indicating the file does not exist and cannot be downloaded. These files do exist and get downloaded through SABnzbd+, but are never complete.
For the most part, Newsdemon has been good, but at the moment I have to figure out where my problems are coming from before I can settle on a server.

Yea I had the exact same problems with newsdemon. I used their service for about a month but found any of the older files would be incomplete. It was horrible for downloading xbox games, even games that were only 100 days old, completion was horrible. For tv shows and movies it worked fine, speeds maxed out.

#!/bin/bash
cd /to/directory/containing/sickbeard
python sickbeard.py &
Then chmod +x /path/to/sickbeard.sh to make the script executable then add to your Login Items in your account preferences making sure to check the newly added item so it will be run on login. While your at it may as well put the SABnzbd+ in there as well so it starts at login too.

for 7.00 though that is a really good deal so if you are going to try it nows the time.
keep in mind that you should download the par2 files as well in case of any incomplete or missing rar files(which happens a lot).

You aren't anybody to tell someone to stop posting. I've contributed plenty at RFD, including posting some info in this thread. You're new and have never done anything here. So if anybody should stop posting, it is you since you haven't posted anything useful in the thread, just more useless crap.
Personally I don't really give a crap about the point, I just take issue with the tone. Who are you to judge and berate their and my posts? All I said was that I appreciated their info and didn't find it off topic.
And again, if you would read my posts and understand the context, you'd see that I said 3-4 people reposting the same thing about the same deal that isn't available doesn't provide relevant info. If you need info spoonfed to you and the same stuff reposted more than once then you need to learn to use the search function.

That is the deal I've been using since it came out.
The Astraweb deal is still available. Astraweb never discontinued any of their deals, they just don't advertise them, that way if folks are thinking of jumping to a cheaper provider, Astra is always an option, but for people who don't know better, they will sign up to more expensive deals. It is kind of similar to all the providers that offer budget and higher end options.
I have had issues with Astraweb completion, but it doesn't happen too often and Astraweb is always better than Highwinds. For a similar price I wouldn't go to Highwinds.

I've been buying the Astraweb $25 for 180Gigs unlimited time deal, usually lasts me 4-5 months for more downloading than I need. If I had a giant screen and wanted hi-def vids, I'd consider this Newsdemon deal.
But for my needs, I find for most films they look fine when the file size is about a gig. So that's a lot of movies, and music, and shows, for $25.
I still use torrents too, because there are frequently better results in searches, less crap, than in Newsgroups or it's easier to figure out what's crap and what's not. Plus recently all those passworded phishing sites. And empty files.
Or maybe it's the Newgroup search engines I use, I dunno... I use **bin***search****, nzbclub, and nzbindex, all free, all... not perfect. And I download via Grabit.
Should I be... paying for a search engine, would the results be better?
Thanks

Guys,
I'm usually not a noob, I swear. But for the love of God, I cannot figure out what's wrong with SABnzb+.
I downloaded it, did the setup, connection said it was all working.
I download an NZB, and it adds it to SABnzb+. It starts downloading and the speed at the top right says "509.6 KB/s" (by the way, is this any good?).
It says time left: 40 minutes
But everytime a portion (.001, etc) is completed, the line turns red and it says 0.00/47.68MB. I presume this means it did not actually downloaded anything? I tried 4 NZB, all aged under 10 days and I got the same issue with all of them. I cannot find where it saved (if it did) the files...
What am I doing wrong?
====================
edit:
Ok figured it out. Talk about a badly made UI!
I'll keep my original post even though I look stupid just in case someone gets the same moronic brain fart :P
So the 0/47 is actually how much is LEFT to download hence the title of the column PROGRESS. So 0/X actually means 100% completed. They could've put a % of completion, would've been much better.
And why the hell would the line turn RED when it's completed and GREEN when it's not...I mean...I might be too used to Newsleecher and Apple products but come on...
Andddd, the files are defaulted in: Documents/downloads/
:D

Just for the sake of throwing it in.. I know its a bit more spensive. but my reliable combo for years now has been:
Newshosting Unlimited @ 15/month (And well worth the extra couple bucks imho)
Nzbmatrix (excellent service, works perfectly with SABnzbd rss feeds, bookmarking, and the firefox sabnzbd plugin too)
SABnzbd for Linux (or whatever OS)
anyways. Just throwin that in ;)
I was paying Newshosting $14.95 USD per month before as well. I switched to https://controlpanel.newshosting.com/signup/index.php?package=92 which is the unlimited package for 1 year for $99. Ends up costing only about $8.25 USD per month on that deal.
Rarely had an incompletes with newshosting

Guys,
I'm usually not a noob, I swear.
====================
:DI use the web interface all the time and it did take me some time to get used to it when I switched from Newsleecher a few years ago.
Once you delve a little more into the settings you'll see that it's very powerful. And I'm sure you've found you can also change the default downloads folders too ;).

I use altbinz and one feature I like and use a lot is that you can start watching what you are downloading (movies/tv on demand if you have a fast enough connection).
Does SABnzbd have that feature? If so I will give it a try as everyone seems to rave about it.

Err... you mean, while you are in the middle of downloading an Xvid/x264 TV-show AVI/MKV, you can start watching it? in Windows Media Player? So the file exists in a "partially extracted" state on your HD?
No, sabnzbd doesn't have that feature afaik

Currently I'm using blocknews, I've got about 10-20GB left from my last
block purchase. I was thinking of getting a 1024GB block now, which is USD$91.59.
That's about 8.9 cents per GB - but in USD. Since USD is at a 3% discount right now,
it's about 8.6 cents Canadian per GB.
When I do the math, it seems as if I need to download more than 78.6 or 81.4GB/mth (depending on whether the
"$7/mth" is USD or CAD) for this deal to be a better value than a 1024GB blocknews purchase. Is that right?
Also, I know blocknews is a reseller but from who? The same provider as Newsdemon or someone better?

I like it but I haven't quite figured out the scripting (post-processing) functionality yet.
I noticed on their main forum they've got a ton of useful scripts for linux users, not so much for PC.
Anyone recommend any good scripts/post-processors for sabnzbd?

Hey guys trying to see if i should take the dive but im confused on one thing about retention days. If your usenet provider says 400days but when you go to a nzb site and it says its age is 500 days..will you still be able to get the file?

No, you won't as the provider wouldn't retain anything older than 400 days in your example.

also note, if you guys are getting errors when downloading, it could be a problem with sabnzb not automatically repairing the files properly so you have to manually repair it. I use a program called Quickpar, redownload the .par2 repair files, and then use the program repair any broken files. I do get a few bad downloads here and there but manually repairing them usually does the trick.
would jump on this deal but I'm already on a 3-month plan with another provider

How are you guys testing what number of connections maxes out your speed? Do you just limit the number of connections in your usenet client?
I just input 20 connections in sabnzbd+ and leave it be. I'm on astraweb's $96 plan.
Also, +10000 on the sabnzbd/sickbeard/couchpotato combo. I use nzbmatrix as an index site. Downloading TV shows has never been easier. This is probably what TiVO feels like. Just set it and forget it. Couchpotato is pretty nifty for movies that you want but not as extensive as Sickbeard for TV. These free programs make downloading and organizing your library so much better.

I've always had blocknews set up with 8 connections and my speed always settles down at 1.8MB/s, which is the max speed of Teksavvy extreme cable (15mbps). And of course I still get the "speed burst" for the first 20 seconds - 3.0MB/s!

Do those tools have media sorting capabilities? i.e. if you queue up an episode of CSI and an MKV version of a Movie, and if you have 2 folders let's say "E:\TV" and "E:\Movies" - will it be able to automatically move the completed file to the appropriate folder?

Why don't you set it to the max number of connections? Would it be detrimental to set it to more connections than you need?
Regarding Sickbeard and Couchpotato, yes they can rename and move the files to the appropriate folder. That's what I love most about them. You just tell them what you want and they do the rest, after you've configured them of course.

If you happen to be using XBMC as your media player, Sickbeard and CouchPotato can also send a command to update the library and display a popup within XBMC to let you know a download was added and/or completed. It's a very nice setup.

Well, it's just that common sense tells me if I can max out my internet connection with 8 connections, there's no need to have any more. :)
And If I'm not mistaken, each connection to the usenet server will have some "overhead" so I suppose there may be a benefit to having less connections if that's sufficient...

That's pretty neat but my media player is a PS3 connecting to PMS on my desktop pc. So once I get sabnzbd to move completed files to the appropriate folders on the PC (separate HD for TV-shows; separate folders for AVI vs. MKV movies, etc.) then it's all good

Yes, with altbinz you can start to watch what you are downloading after about 30-60 seconds.
This obviously only works if your download rate is faster than the video playback rate.
One downside is that if the file is damaged it will stop playing at that point because it cant make repairs
until the download is complete.
I don't use Windows Media Player so I don't know if works (don't see why not) but it definitely works with KMPlayer.

Here are some guides. The SABnzbd+ and Sickbeard guides are intended for linux users, but if you skip past the installation part, the configuration should apply to all systems I think.
Newsgroups Guide (http://www.slyck.com/Newsgroups_Guide)
SABnzbd+ Guide (http://www.ainer.org/sabnzbd-install-setup-and-configuration-guide-for-ubuntu-10-04-lucid-lynx)
Sickbeard Guide (http://www.ainer.org/sick-beard-install-setup-and-configuration-guide-for-ubuntu-10-04-lts-lucid-lynx)
I don't have any guides for CouchPotato, but once you have it installed, it's fairly simple to understand, especially if you've already gone through setting up Sickbeard.

Most servers forbid sharing an account and will only allow one connection at a time. Other's forbid it, but don't actually stop you from doing it, but I suspect they would look into things if you start doing some heavy downloading from multiple IPs. I think a few allow sharing, but I'm not sure who.
As for NewsDemon, they don't allow it, but it can be done.

Hmm... ok, it verified as I was typing this message out. Guess they did something because I sent them a support email.

Retention rate on newsdemon seems to be less than advertised. I tried to download something that was 720 days old and got lots of broken files.
